Multiple Breeds  Reply with quote

I have a large aviary (24m3) with +- 24 Budgies, 6 Cockatiels, 2 Rabbits and 2 Guinea Pigs. They all get along very well. My question is: What other birds can I introduce to the aviary. I have heard the Zebra Finches are compatible? Any experience \ comments would be welcome.

hi, you have something like a zoo home. great. i havew beside the budgies and cockatiels also redback and multi colour paraquits. they all do fine together.
i would'nt put any finches with the budgies as the budgies might attack them. better have a similar kind of bird like you have already.

Unfortunately I don't have that kind of experience.

I do know someone with finches & a canary that house with a Budgie or 2. But like was said - they might gang up on a smaller bird. Basically - as you know - in an aviary they will stay away from each other mostly - flock with their own.

I've heard that Bourkes Parakeets do well with most birds of that size range.

If it was me & I had a big aviary I'd look into the Swift Parakeet - I really think they are lovely - but they need a flock of their own & flying room.

Senegals & Budgies  Reply with quote

Feather Thanks for the replies. Yup, I do truly feel like I live in a Zoo. We also have a cat, a dog and a Senegal that are not in the Aviary!

Thanks for your suggestions. I wonder if anyone has ever kept any Senegals with Budgies and Cockatiels. I know that budgies are little bullies but they get on well with Cockatiels, I assume, because of the size differential. We also know that they are both from the same Island (sorry Australia, I have stripped your continent classification). Senegal's are very similarly in size, and are related, to Bourkes Parrots. Keeping of Bourkes Parrots here is very difficult because they are indigenous to the country (but not our province). This means that I would need a special licence.

My main reason for breeding birds is because I feel that pets keep us in touch with our humanity. For this reason, it does not make sense for me to breed parrots that do not make good pets.

Ultimately I would be looking at a keeping 30 budgies with 8 cockatiels and 4 - 6 Senegal's.

Stupit! Stupit! Arrgggghhhh, I totally confused! We have Meyer's Parrots here, not Bourkes! Sorry, guys, I was on the wrong continent! My question remains, anyone have experience keeping Senegals with Budgies and Cockatiels?

All the people that I know who have Sennies or any from that group rarely have them in groups. Sadly - they can be one person birds but maybe if they are raised together it would be OK - but then they would be kind of wild. Sennies can do a lot of damage to a small bird. Having said that I know a woman with Suns in her aviary & they are also with Budgies - they stay in differnt areas but eat in one large general space.

I knew a woman who had a small indoor aviary that had 3 Conures with 6 Tiels + 2 Princess Parakeets. Each group stayed together & rarely interacted. The Conures were a mixed bag but they all got along. [Quaker (yah - not a conure but similar in size & spirit), Jenday, Nanday]

Pets do connect us to compassion & love. But if you can't offer them what they need then you are not doing them a favour.
