My son is fascianted by birds, me-not so much. But, I went ahead and bought a pair of budgies to become a part of our family. I am such a sucker, lol.
Well, they are pretty-I didn't pick them out. My little cousin did using this critieria, "We'll pick the ugliest ones becuase no one else will want them and they will have to be in the cage alone when all their brothers and sisters fond homes." lol, yea. She's 12-who am I to argue?
I don't think they are particularly 'ugly' they are....different.
In any case, they are sweet little things-I am surprised by how much I like them. They are babies still. They were quite frightened after coming home yesterday, and still haven't made much noise other than to 'yell' at the vaccuum today. Although last night they made a few cute little noises while they settled down for the night-after all the kids were in bed.
I don't know much about birds-ok that's an understatement. I know practically nothing, lol. I do have one question.
Are these little guys gonna speak up eventually? Keep in mind I just brought them home yesterday afternoon, but they seem wary. Is there something I can do to make them feel more 'at home'? They haven't moved from the exact spot on the perch they flew to yesterday, I think they even slept there. I feel bad for these little guys. |

Hi & Welcome - welcome to owning or being owned by birds.
I got my 1st Budgie almost 2 years ago. So I am not an expert.
Getting 2 babies at once may or may not be the easiest for you. They will be very happy however, as Budgies really love company & who to better understand their needs than another Budgie?
As they are new to your home - give them lots of time alone for a few days - lots of quiet so they aren't frightened. Birds are very observant - they will be taking everything in. Being a babies they know nothing & want to explore everything - once they are no longer afraid.
One of the 1st steps in training them to be hand tame is to just hang out - read or keep them company for the first week, beside the cage & don't stare at them too much. They need to feel you are not a predator.
The 2nd step is to open the cage door & offer your hand or perch to step up on & repeat the words step up. If you try a few times a day for a few days they will probably get the idea pretty quickly. With 2 you might get group running around. Do not grab them - this will only stop the taming. There are many sites on training. Some say grab them & hold them until they quiet. I disagree. This was done to my young bird Rio, by the breeder, & now he is very rebellious - so I am still waiting for him to become tame - he is now 1 year old.
You can checkout my first diary pages - when I got my Laker. He was alone & mature however. Rio came a year later. I do know people who got 2 from the start & they are quiet tame - just be very patient
They love music. They need 10 -12 hours of sleep a night & will respond to being allowed to watch the dusk approach - so they won't go into premature molts. If you live in the N hem. - the spring time is great to collect fresh unripe grass with seed heads - they love them - see my diary for what I did - some fun things for you & your kids to do.
Ask any questions & I &/orothers will try & help.
All the best.
Tell us about the cage & food & what is happening. Set up photos too - I love photos. |
