| American Budgies |

|
Ok, I'll accept the term English Budgie given that Budgies were first taken to England and then bred into various other colours \ sized. But come on guys, American Budgie??? I would classify an American Budgie as any budgie that learns to speak with an Yankee Accent!!!!
Here in Africa, a budgie is a budgie is a budgie except if it is an English Budgie and here they are know as Show Budgies (why honour the English?)?
Occassionally, when someone is trying to be clever that are also referred to as Australian Grass Parakeets.
Interestingly, Wikipedia also gives Budgies the following names:
Common Pet Parakeet
Shell Parakeet
Warbling Grass Parakeet
Canary Parrot
Zebra Parrot
Flight Bird
Scallop Parrrot
To me, with my love of these little blighters, Budgie does just fine!!! |

I love the many Budgie names you came up with in your search. I agree with you as I always call the larger Budgie the Show Budgie and the regular ones either Regular or nothing beyond their colourations.
Nothing to get upset about even if it is disconcerting - I have felt that myself. I think that many people are comfortable with their local slang and forget that their is a more 'correct' and International way to speak about the birds they have.
Parakeets or Keets
is quite old fashioned and you hear it most in the States - perhaps because of isolation - it is the only thing I can think of for the phenomena. I think a lot of people outside of the States don't understand how big the US really is - much bigger than 5 or 6 countries and has a wide diversity - amazing place over all.
What really cracks me up is when I read about Australian Keets or variations .... I loving call my Budgies 'Australian Fighting Birds'. |

I lived the the States and I've only ever heard of them as Parakeets. It's only when I wanted one when I learned they were also called Budgerigars! |

LOL - they are Budgies! - or Budgerigars.
Parakeets refers to a long tailed parrot
like the Indian Ringneck [IRN], the Grass Parakeets and many more. I guess cause Budgies are Parakeets they were referred to as parakeets only - its kind of like calling them Parrots - accurate but not informative. |
