What is the physical difference between a budgie and parakeet? I know they are different, but how do you tell them apart? |

I don't know. I'd say a budgie is a species, parakeets are a family of birds, including budgies and other parakeet species. |

Hi, the understanding that I have is that the so called parakeet in the america is actually the budgie. Parakeet, is like saying parrot. Parakeet is a family like Sue said. There are several parakeets... budgies, ringnecks, princess... basically any hookedbilled with a long slendered bill and a slender body.
Budgie, is a species of bird. budgie is a type of parakeet. |

Do a search on English Budgie and you will see the difference. They look like a massive parakeet. They stand very upright and with the chest pushed out and a much larger head. They do not live as long as parakeets. They are so inbred like our purebred dogs that they have too many congenital weaknesses |

English budgies are just the same as the normal budgies (known as the parakeet in the US) except for it's size! They are normally bred for show, and some people have them as pet. They have the same genetic make up as the normal ones. Parakeets are a group of family of bird that budgies belong in. The budgerigar parakeets somehow became the 'parakeet' in the US. Over here budgies are budgies, in fact many people wouldn't know what you're talking about if you say parakeet. that's just Australia though, where the budgies originate. Cheers |

There are many different types of parakeets as others have already pointed out. My favorite type of parakeet is a budgie. The difference between English Budgies and American budgies are simple. English budgies are bigger, not as long lived and they tend to be calmer. The American budgie is more like the budgies in the wild. English budgies are called English budgies because they were origonally bred for show in Enland. people in America call budgies parakeets it is probably they equivalent of calling a rat a rodent. The difference is that we don't sell rats under the name rodent. most people can tell the difference between a rat and a rabbit but both are rodents. Hoped that helped, I myself love examples so that I can better understand what and why If you want some very different looking parakeets look up mustached parakeets or princess of wales parakeets. |

you know I find it interesting that the budgies are known as the 'american budgies'... no offence, but really, budgies are not American, and why are they then called the 'American Budgies', shouldn't it be the 'Australian Budgies' since they are natives to Australia?? I can totally understand the 'English Budgies' as they were bred in England to be a bigger sized show birds, but 'American budgies'?? Just a thought. |

I totally agree that they shouldn't be called "American Budgies". They might be called "American Budgies" because they were mass produced in America for pets but I am not quite sure. |

I dunno, maybe American Budgie refers to a pet budgie living in America and budgie refers to the ones in the wild. |

Actually, rabbits are not rodents. They come from a group called Lagomorpha which includes rabbits, hares, and pikas. It's a pretty interesting fact even though its not about birds. |

Well then insert chinchilla unless they aren't rodents too lol. I don't know much about rabbits as I have never liked them but that is interesting trivia. |

Most call English budgies "parakeets".
I don't know why they're called American either! Well, I'm saying I have a Canadian Budgie, because fig was raised in Canada. |
