HELP! :-(  Reply with quote

I have a BIG problem, iv recently bought two Lovebirds, im not 100% sure what type tho, I think there Camello Lovebirds, iv been traying to train them and have secceded to a certain degree, they will eat out of my hand and dont mind me going near there cage as much as they did when i first got them!

SO i'v started letting them out of the cage for an hour or so a day and letting them fly around the room, while i clean the cage. one however isnt such a good flyer, i put this down to inexperiance, but today the male, i think' fly and landed on the fire place, sat there for a second and fell off, when he got to the ground he seemed fine so i thought nothing off it, although again a few minutes later the same bird was sittin on the back of the sofa, when it again just seems to faint, fortunatly i caught him that time, then the same thing happened yet again only he was sittin on the ground this time, he just fell/rolled onto his side and shock for a second or to then came around and seemed fine!

Really do not know what happened, has me worried, any help is welcome! I'm going to take a visit to the vets first thing monday morning!

He is in his cage now and seems grand! He's purched up and chatting away! But I would imagine this type of thing doesnt happen for nothing!?! Sad

I'm sorry, I don't really understand.. Does he do this every now and then?
Could it be epilepsy?

I hope you'll have a good avian vet there? Normal vets don't know a lot about birds.

Please let us know what comes out..

Hi Pacology,
I'm sorry to hear about your bird's problem. I agree with Sue, the first thing that came to my mind also was epilepsy.

no this is the first he's down it, i thought epilepsy to, but there was nothing around to make him take a fit as such, im not really sure how epilepsy works tho!

Today he's sitting purched up with his feather puffed out, he seems really lazy and looks quite dirty too! could he have a cold or a flu? i think im going to dring him to the vets at the zoo?!?

thanks again folks! Smile

I think with epilepsy you have spontaneous seizures, they don't necessarily have to be triggered by something, I don't think.. but I'm not 100% sure. Here's a link to information about seizures in birds: http://www.avianweb.com/seizures.html

I don't know about the vet at the zoo, I think they should be knowledgeable about exotic animals, but just make sure he or she is certified in Avian medicine, because otherwise he won't be trained to know much about birds, and might not be able to give you the right diagnosis. Where do you live? Maybe there are people here that live in your city that could recommend a good avian vet to you.

If he's sitting puffed up and lethargic, he probably is sick Sad Can you seperate him from your other lovebird until you find out what's wrong with him? Also you should put a heating pad or lamp to keep him extra warm, until you can get him to the vet tomorrow.

Good luck, please let us know what the vet says.

I'm sorry to hear that the bird is sick Sad
Did you think about isolating him from the other bird until you find out what is going on?

hi folks, as the day progressed the bird got a little worse as it seemed, so i took him to the zoo, and the avian keeper came and took a look at him, and said he thinks he may have worms. And recommended an avain vet, so i took the bird there yesterday, and he was great the vet said he wasnt 100% why he was fainting but said he was really thin on his chest, and had little muscel there and this was why he wasnt flying good, so he gave me some medicine to take care of worms.

he also said that the bird may well be calcium deficiant, he said 80% of birds that come into him are! so he gave me a calcium powder to! And then told me that i was doing an excellent job of taking care of the birdies Very Happy

anyway thanks folks, i guess this is my first little scare, and hopfully its over now! Smile

Hmmm did the vet see any worms in his feces? Or did he just give some medication?

I had actually just cleaned the cage out before i brought them to the vets, altho when my dad took a little look at them he thought that one looked a little more like worms!

Also they two birds were pooing a little different from the other! he wormed the birds anyway and gave me medication for them both just to make sure!

and gave me a lot of other stuff for them too, like pellets and calcivet!

once more quick question people, DO LOVEBIRDS ALWAYS SLEEP WITH EACH OTHER, like side by side? they have every day iv had them apart from right now!! not sure if i should be worried or not! Sad

well I hope that the vet is right about the worms, that means that it is easily treatable. Smile

and yes lovies tend to sleep snuggle up to each other if they are bonded to each other.

Please do keep us updated on their progress with the worming and all that.
