| Toocans? |
|
|
Do any of you guys know anything about keeping Toocans as pets? Not that I want one, I just keep seeing books on pet birds with Tucan pictures on the cover, and the idea of having a Tucan seems a bit outrageous because they seem so exotic. I'm pretty sure it's not even legal in Canada. Just wondering if you guys know anyone who has one.

I don't know about tucans, just that they're beautiful!
They also seem to be messy, or am I wrong here? |

I have seen in a couple of places on the internet where people do have tucans as companions, I just can't remember any of the sites off hand.
How cool would that be! I think they are just SO beautiful, but I don't know how they would behave in a home. The ones I've seen in zoos seem docile enough. I can't even imagine how much one would cost!! |

The larger ones are quite expensive, if I remember correctly something around 4000 dollars and up!
They don't live that long, sadly! |

H'mm yeah, that's too bad. I'm surprised about the price though, I expected to be much more. Here a hyacinth macaw costs about that much. The most expensive bird here is a hawk head, they cost just over $5000. |

toucans are large softbills. People do keep them as pets, I bet there might be tucans as pets in canada. In Toronto though...I just don't know. A big beak tho!! In BirdTalk magazine there was a tucan article..they seemed to make nice pets cuz there were toucan parronts who wrote in. Even a pic of a birdstore owner cuddleling a toucan.
I just dont know where you'ld get one pretty tho |

After a quick google search, I found this website on pet Toucans: http://www.summersbirds.com/ Tons of information there about Toucans! There's also a helpful FAQ: http://www.summersbirds.com/toucans-faq.htm
According to that FAQ, they can live up to about 25 years, if properly cared for. This breeder charges $1500 - $2500, and the larger types of Toucans are about 'three times that'.
I would've never thought people would've kept Toucans as pets, either! Huh! Learn something new everyday. Toucans sure are gorgeous, though, that's for sure... |

The Breeder I deal with has two different ones. I don't think he is breeding them yet. But they are both sweet. One is little about the size of a large Tiel and the other is about the size of a small Too. I will get pictures the next time I am out that way.
Anything you want to know about them in particlar? |

I posted this question so long ago I guess at the time it was hard for me to imagine them as pets. I still don't think they should be kept in cages, and that they're only suited for big aviaries, since they don't climb, I think even a large Macaw cage would be too small for them. |

The Cages are a problem. They do have a cage that is big enough to house at lest 4 big Macaws for the big one, the little one they keep at thier house. I have only seen it in thier flight Avairy. These people are bird lovers first and breeders just to pay the bills. |

Hi Shirin,
Ever since I met a toucan at Bird World - see my diary for me and the Toco Toucan, I have wanted one I have even asked the following .http://www.emeraldforestbirds.com if they know of any toucan breeders in the UK...
I adore them and I have heard that they are so much fun and are very cuddly...
*OH SIGH* I want one...
