| I got a question!!! |
|
|
For a while now Petra has been sleeping at the bottom of her cage at night , I was wondering if that was normal? Every night at around 10pm (when I go to sleep) she will sit and sleep at the bottom of her cage till between 7am - 9am (when I wake up) she'll get back up on her perches. If this IS normal than can you explain to me why she does this, and if its NOT, what should I do?

Hmmmm ... I'm just not sure. It's certainly not real common that a bird sleeps on the bottom of the cage, but if she gets back up & carries on like normal during the day, I would say she's OK & for some reason or other just feels comfortable sleeping on the bottom of the cage.
How long has she done that? I'm not at all experienced in egg laying, but I wonder if perhaps she's trying to nest?
sorry ... I just can't offer much info. |

Hmmm.... I think shes been doing it for just over a month.... how old are cockatiels when they start to lay eggs? and if she does start laying eggs will it affect the bond between us?

I've just not done any research on the subject I'm afraid & am not experienced with the egg laying & nesting.
BUT my 'tiel never laid an egg until she was at least 5 yrs old & she had 2 unfertile clutches.
IF Petra ever does lay eggs, please contact an avian vet about it, or do some research into it, as she will need extra calcium & nutrients in her diet. And 'tiels are well known for having egg binding problems which can be fatal! |

That doesn't seem normal.
&& Cockatiels reach sexual maturity in about one year.
I would contact an avain vet about it.
When one of my tiels got an bacterial infection.
She also sat on the bottom of her cage.
But she never got back up on her perches.
I took her to the vet and he treated her.
Tiels often try to hide their sickness out of instinct to hide from predators.
I wouldn't take a chance and have her checked out.
Do you have a blanket you put over her cage??
Sometimes when I put a blanket over my lovebirds cage.
It wont go over the bottom because it's not big enough.
&& she sleeps on the bottom of her cage so she can see me.
Could that be it?? |

hmmmmm... has she ever laid eggs before? if so it may be that she is eggbound. i'm not saying that thats what it is but it might be.
does she have a bump near her vent? is she there all day every day?
we had a little finch that was also laying at the bottom of the cage and it turned out she was egg bound.
emmy
p.s. if she is eggbound put her in a warm enviroment and put mineral oil around her vent |

Be safe, take her to a Vet. Sleeping at the bottom of the cage could be the early signs of a problem and it could be nothing. None of our birds do this, they all get as high as they can to sleep. This is part of the instinct of a pray animal.
