| Kacey's Wing Trauma |
|
|
Today was a horrible day. Had to rush little Kacey my cinnamon tiel to the vet with a broken right wing feather. Somehow my sennie, Pepper crossed 2 couches and jumped onto the footstool where the tiels pettents sit. Pepper went into Kacey's tent and a fight broke out ending with Kacey all bloody. My dad and I were not home at the time. When we got home my mom told me what happened, I took Kacey and cleaned her up to see the damage. Luckily no active bleeding or any blood vessels were damaged, but I could tell her wing was broke at the shoulder. I could see bone on the inside of her right shoulder. So we rushed her to the Vet. The carpals were broken and skin very maserated. Vet fixed her up and put wing in a cast/splint. She is also on antibiotics for 14 days due to it being an open wound. Kacey doesn't like the medicine. She goes back on Monday for recheck on how she is doing. We spent an hour at the vet and by time we got home I had to rush off to work. I was very worried about Kacey. But my folks said she did fine and was getting around okay. She was very subdued after coming home from vet. Now we just have to make sure she doesn't hurt herself by trying to fly. Also got to be very watchful of Pepper when tiels are out. Maxi is a fighter, but Kacey isn't.
Check out her diary page to see her in her pink cast/splint.
Will do updates as she heals. |

Oh my gosh! How frightful! The poor little sweetie Give her big hugs for me too! And hugs to you & your folks, I'm sure it was a very bad day for all of you!
It looks like she's is handling things welll. Boy, little 'tiels sure are survivors, aren't they? They just always seem to come thru everything pretty much unphased, don't they? |

Kacey is such a little sweetie, thats why I think she lost the fight between her and Pepper. She also doesn't know how to bite. I don't think Pepper meant to hurt her. She has been very quiet since the mishap. Maxi also has been worried about her, he had a fit about the cast on her wing. He thought we were hurting her. He's been watching over her today.
Will find out on Monday when she goes back to the vet for recheck as to length of time for healing and no complications occur. She has been taking her medicine well, but you can tell she doesn't like it. |

I wish Amy liked mashed potatoes like or other birds, we would just put her meds in there. But like Kacey she hates her meds..... I have to hold her down while Carrie forces the meds in her mouth..Not fun at all.

Papug almost always gives up on fights with Booboo even though he is almost twice as big as Booboo. It must be in their nature not to be aggresive.
As for potatoes... Papug loves them and they don't even have to be mashed!
Poor Kacey must be hurting Is her medication just an antibiotic or also some sort of pain killer? |

Kacey's meds is just an antibiotic. I do think that on the first day the vet gave her some pain meds because she was moving a lot faster and such then. Yesterday and today she is moving a bit slower. She doesn't screech when we pick her up, carefully of course, Her appetite is good though and she is trying to preen her feathers. She spends most of her day resting. She has not tried to chew on the splint, she is being so good. We are keeping a close watch over her and making sure she doesn't hurt herself by jumping off table or cage or if she is on my mom.
Her vet appt is Mon Jan 8th at 3pm, I have questions written to ask the vet about her wing progress, duration of splint being on and if there will be any lasting bad effects from the break.
Updates will be posted Monday nite after vet visit. |

I hope so too. I feel so bad every time I watch her eat or walk across the floor. She doesn't seem to be in pain. We are just worried over her. We don't want her to get an infection either, but hopefully the antibiotics will prevent that. |

I did not get good news today. I had to work so my Dad took Kacey to the Vet with a list of questions I had. The Vet was not happy, there was no sign of any healing taking place. Also there was a lot of swelling in the wing under the cast. Kacey recieved a calcium shot to help with healing also because she had been laying eggs at the time(total of 7). Kacey also lost 8 grams, down to 95gms from 103gm on Jan 3rd. Her appetite has been good though considering and she's been resting a lot. Vet also said it will take 3 weeks for wing to heal if it does heal. If no healing occurs, the vet may have to amputate Kacey's right wing. Kacey has another appt on Friday Jan 12th at 9:30am. I will be able to go to that appt. Please keep Kacey in your thoughts and prayers. I hope she doesn't end up loosing her wing, she will never get the chance to learn to fly and build up her self esteem.
She is now sporting a green cast on her wing, will take pic tomorrow and post on her diary page. Will keep everyone updated to her progress.
Sorry so long of a post.
