| Molting? |
|
|
Kozmo has been preening...alot. And it seems like he may have some pin feathers behind the head. Could he be molting? How often do tiels generally molt? |

sounds like he is molting. some birds may molt all year round, and some they molt twice a year, or even only once a year. so it really does depends on the birds.
My cockatoo, he molts all year round, with a couple of weeks of heavy molting a year, that's when all the bigger feathers like tails and flight comes out. other time of the year he's constantly loosing and replacing old feathers with new. |

All birds always preen a lot
My Papug generally molts twice a year - that's when he loses a lot of feathers and the new ones are growing at the same time. You can tell - the feathers are everywhere... His last molt happened exactly at the same time as my lovebirds molt. I could make pillows from all the feathers floating around |

Generally I found my tiels moult once or twice a year, and it definately sounds like yours is moulting, you will also find the larger feathers (wing and tail) coming out which you might not usually find. But most birds will preen at least once a day. |

You are not alone! I save all of the feathers, except the tiny ones. I have a large glass jar for each bird to store their feathers. I plan to use them in photo albums, but for now, they look pretty in jars |
