| question about buying a tiel |
|

Is it best to buy a tiel from a petshop or breeder? Whats the youngest age that I should be looking for when buying a tiel so that I don't get one that is too young. |

Hi Dan,
I would tend to lean towards a breeder rather than a pet shop, but of course if you know of a pet shop that does take great care of their animals, by all mean. But I would think that buying from a breeder is better and be cheaper too. Even with breeders, I've seen many irresponsible backyard breeders, so just be careful and make sure you check out the breeder first before deciding.
as with how young, I'm not very sure on how long it takes a tiel to wean, but what you want is a weaned bird that is already eating on their own, and is eating a big variety of food already. it is harder to convert birds at a later stage in life if they are already use to eating only seeds diet.
good luck. |

I see, I have a cage around here that I'm planning on using for the tiel. I'll take a pic of it in the morning so that you guys can tell me if it's a good size for a tiel. |

OMG I just got back home from Pet Smart and they had an adorable Hand Fed White Face Cockatiel. Fully Weened, active and very cute. He looked very happy, had pellets and other treats in his food dish, plenty of toys in his cage. He was whistling at me and I whistled back then he would whistle the tune I whistled. I felt like just taking him home. I hope to get him really soon. |

I'm not sure but it's definitely big enough for a cockatiel. Let me upload the pic I took and I'll post it here. |

Looks like an alright cage, but then again, it also look pretty small without the dimension, it is hard to tell if it'll be big enough or not. Can you measure it and let us know what it is? And oh, my advice is, to take out all those mirrors. Tiels may develop a liking to it's own reflection as a bird companion, so therefore are harder to hand tame or keep tame.
Cheers

lol....It seems like White Face 'Tiels are so whistley! I met one at a petstore that did the same thing...He was pretty awesome. It does sound like your hooked on him! Yeah, Bih is right, i'd take all those mirrors out...You want him to bond with you instead of himself...Those vain lil boogers The cage does look fine to me, but sometimes it's hard to tell in pictures. |

I was looking around, and I think the consensus is that for a single tiel, the minimum cage size should be 20 inch long, 20 inch deep, and 18 inch high. cheers. |

well I talked with my mother about getting it and she said that right now I have priorities and that there will be other tiels in the future. I agree with her too, right now I'm saving up for a car so I can go to school. In the meantime I'll be doing research, asking questions and maybe saving a tittle money on the side for an even nicer cage. Also I read about cages on here and did a full inspection on the cage and discovered some rust on the cage itself. So I'll be getting a new cage down the road. I am a little bummed out that I wont be getting the little fella but after finding rust on the cage I'm happy that I didn't put him in the cage. You guys have great info here and I'm glad I found this forum. |

What do you think of this cage? I found this site by searching cockatiel cage on google. I think it looks really nice, great price and excellent size. |

I forgot to ask, what's the price range for a white face tiel? At the pet store they were asking 130 USD. If I can get one cheaper from a breeder then I'll probably go that route and start searching for a breeder. |
