| Snow!!!!!! |

It just snowed a bunch the other day and just a minute ago i saw a pic someone who had brought there 'Teil outside in the snow and the bird looked fine. Now i always woried about the temp. around Petra but I would also like Petra to enjoy the snow with me! During the day its not the cold except for a few chilly breezes... Im going with all the kids sledding and was wondering if it would be ok to bring Petra with the snow and all?
I dont want him getting sick though... is it ok for him to go outside with me? |

Petra, it's ok to bring your tiel outside on these conditions:
- The bird is properly clipped and also tested on flight abilities OR/and wears a harnass.
- It's not minus VERY VERY cold with a very mean wind.
(Around freezing point: 0 degrees celcius, I don't know what it is in Fahrenheit, is ok)
- The bird is in good condition. Not plucked a lot.
- The bird isn't very young.
- I'd stick to 10 minutes the first time. I put my birds outside for a longer period but I just want to be careful! I wouldn't put her in the snow for a long time. A walk would be ok..
Last and not least:
- Don't forget your camera to make some awesome photos! |

Yea i do have a harness for him but he doesnt like it that much... he is trained to be outside for long periods of time (without the harness) but he hasnt been outside for a wile so im going to bring his harness anyway just incase.
I wish i had a camera but my camera broke a while ago, i need to buy a new one.
Its about 27F right now and it should warm up a little later.. is that ok for him?
Thanks for helping me out though |

Hi Petra
My birds don't go outside so I can't really help you out with this one. If I take them outside for whatever reason its always in secure cages.
When I was a kid I had a budgie that flew away through an open window... |

Well when i had my first 'Teil my brother wanted to play with it while i was at school one day and C.C. (the 'Teil) flew away. I was so upset so me and my friend put flyers up around the neiborhood and a few days later the guy across the street called us and asked if we were still missing a 'Teil and we got her back!! Its was a miracle that we got her back.
But ever since that ive been aware and cosious about my birds going outside without a harness. Now C.C. loved the harness (the first one i made myself then i bought one), he looked forward to having it put on... but Petra hates it to death.
When I had Parakeet and her sis one day someone left the front door open while they were outside of there cage and the "Hopped" out the door. the neighboors 3 houses down found them and brought them back to me... I guess i have good luck with birds (comming back to me) or something. |

Sue suggested bringing some snow inside for them to test out - I did with my Budgie Laker - he was horrified! But that was the first time - forgot to take a photo - he was frantic to get away!
I have taken his cage outside so he can experience the cold & fresh air & wind. He rather likes it & I only stay out as long as i can stand it myself, without a coat - after all if they're used to a hot-house weather it will be a shock - but exciting. I just have to be careful the cage stays together.
There are some other members who have taken great photos of their birds in the snow L Marie(?) as well as Sue. |

0C = 30F this is the scale
-2.7C = 27F - it's below freezing - so you know it's cold.
I took Laker out when it was -15C [or 5F] but we also live on the east side of a large apartment building & the balcony can be quite protected. He was out about 3 minutes.

hi!
I took my 'Tiel outside for just about 10 mins. not too long ago....
I waited until it was about 40 F. outside...so there would still be snow, but it wouldn't be too too too cold...
he's clipped, and I check before I take them out if they can fly.
I haven't used a harnass on Qwill before, but I'm sure he'd hate it too.
I think once it warms up just a few degrees....
maybe once it's just above freezing...
he should be fine.
maybe once you have the harnass on and he's out in the snow he'll forget about it....
like I said, I don't know about harnasses and 'Tiels....
good luck!
and be sure to tell us all about it if you do take him out!
(since you don't have a camera)

So it was quite cold and im still afraid he'll ketch a cold or something so for now i just stood at the front door with him.. i think ill still bring a little snow inside for him. were origanaly from FL. (he was hatched there and hes lived there his whole 1 1/2 years so far)and i had his carrier bundled up warm so he wouldnt ketch a cold getting off the plane (then it was below freazing) so he really doesnt know what the cold feals like... im worried about his health still! I worry about him getting sick all the time. |

I think that's a good idea to take it slowly at first & let him acclimate to it a little bit. |

Hi Petra
Animals, just like humans, will not catch a cold just from the cold temperature. There are viruses, bacteria and molds that can make us all sick. If your birds is not in contact with any other sick birds and if he is not sick himself to start with, he will definitely NOT catch a cold just from being exposed to cold. He can develop hypothermia (too low body temperature) from prolonged exposure to outside cold which may be dengerous as well but he will not catch a cold the way we may think about it (sneazing, cough, fever,etc...).
Good luck with your outdoors adventures |
