My female cinnamon tiel is having some tail problems. She is going to the vet on wed for checkup and wings/nails trimmed.
In one of my diary pages, it talks of Kacey's problem of growing a tail. Well she now has a tail but the feathers are coming in weird. Some of the feathers will curl inward or outward. She has lost a couple of the short curled tail feathers, they just fall out, not broken. Can a bird have feather follicle damage from landing on their tail quite often when very young. She was given to us as a special needs bird after loosing our tiel Digger.
She also had 2 incidents of broken blood feathers, one in each wing last weekend. Her left side bled bad and took 3 times with styptic powder and pressure to stop the bleeding. All she did was flap her wings and the feathers broke and there was blood everywhere. She has had many problems in her short 1 1/2 yrs of life. We are worried that she won't live a very long life.
I plan to ask the vet about her problems. She has a tail, but its not a very pretty one. Thanks for listening to Kacey's problems. |

All 3 birds went to the vet today, all 3 are in excellent health.
Vet suggested that we let Kacey's wings grow out for a year and let her learn to fly better so she isn't so klutzy and hurt herself. All her feathers were checked over, vet said it may take quite a few more molts of her tail feathers before we find out if there is permanent follicle damage or if will take time before she gets a pretty tail. She lost her one long tail feather sometime this morning, I haven't found it yet. We will be keeping a close watch on her progress. She also has to be careful due to vet noticed a wing bloodfeather with blood in the shaft, she somehow damaged it. Time will tel if it just falls out or if she can keep it. She is our special needs birdy and we love her no matter what. |

I have not confrimed this with any professional, But I think the feathers from in buds behind the current feathers, so they can be damaged long before they even come out. Spike one of our tiels still has tail feather trouble, it has been one year. However Willow our Sun Couner, Had trouble for the first year and a half. She is finally starting to grow poper feathers after 2 years. I am sure your baby will be fine as well..

well I am just glad to hear that all three birds are in good health. keep us updated with the tail feather growth.. I hope it's nothing permanent.
I Think it's a great idea for her to learn to fly. this might help her with the tail problem. good luck. |

Thanks John and cheeta. I will keep you updated on Kacey's progress. We just worry about her and all the problems she has been having with her feathers. I know the difference between a normal molt and when feathers that should not be molting just fall out. The vet also said she had some brittle tail feathers that break very easily. At least she has some short tail feathers. I do hope one day she will have some pretty tail feathers to show off. She is a cutie by the way. |
