WE have had astrix for over a month now and he is 17 weeks old. I am slightly conserned with his skill level he will still sometimes loose his balance and fall off a perch or flap flap flap madly to stay up. Its hard because I have 2 diff bird species in the same cage I notice it more and he dosnt hop from branch to branch he still uses his beak or the cage rails I know he is still young but I dont remember any of the other birds Ive been around taking this long to become... agile ....I guess is the word Im looking for............##kellie

Hi Kellie
I don't think you should be that concerned about Astrix using his beak to transfer himself from place to place. My Papug does it all the time although (s)he is already about 10 months old, maybe it's just a cockatiel thing Wink
I'm not sure what to make of loosing the balance though... hmmm... Papug slammed into the walls a few times but that was mainly when (s)he was learning to fly.
Do you think Astrix would benefit from having his own cage? How is he managing when he is out of the cage?

Nah dont think the cage is the problem they are in a very big cage. He just dosnt seem to have much confidence, he crawls/climbs very slowly down the side to get to the food and then back up again.I dont know hes probly fine, I'm not really used to cockatiels and my other bird toby is so active and climbs upside down and jumps and evrything so confidently I shouldnt really compare i guess. I have been meaning to ask do cockatiels eat with there foot because astrix has started to (not very well) and Im not sure if hes got this off toby or they just do it I have never seen another one do it but????????

I guess tiels are just more cautious and shy Smile
Papug doesn't eat with his foot - often when he drops something (for example his beloved green peas) he will stare expectantly and wait for me to pick it up and give it back to him again. He will not even try to hold it with his paw. I know that he can use his foot if he wants to though... he picks things up with his foot when he is playing, ie toys, etc...

Hi everyone,Ksue don't worry about the flapping stage on astrix for it's quiet normal for Cockatiels to do this at a young stage and even adult .Cockatiel's in my avairies aren't hoppers they rather climb along the wire nearly all the time and since Astrix is so young he/she is probably trying to keep balance flapping it's wings while it's climbing. Also being a young tiel l have found they all try to flap in a wierd manner up and down very fast in short burst's,but in time it will pass.Astrix sounds like he is experimenting with what he can do, than rather what he can't."hey l got these things on my back and they flap woops to much(fall)".Just a thought of what Astrix might be thinking to make you worry but i personnally wouldn't. Wink .Let me know how things are going anyway...for you'll never ever know if you never ever ask Very Happy oh and yes Cockatiels do like to eat with their feet.Just curious is it the Left or Right foot ,not that it matters just wondering for l have a belief, not that it's true but Parrot's are left footers Laughing

Sorry I might be ruining your theory but toby my kak is exclusivly right Footed and I have only seen astrix use his left foot once the reast of the time its right Rolling Eyes But yeah I figured the flapping was pretty normal it scares poor toby though he looks at me like "help" but is it still normal for him to fall......he has also been quite cranky the last few days is this a hormone thing hes swawking and niping again when he WAS starting to settle down hes between 4-5 months now

That's alright about your kak and Astrix not being left footed Smile As for the falling, well it happens quiet alot when they are learning, soon he will realize falling is not a good thing then learn to avoid it by trying to balance more.As for the cranky stage just avoid it for there is a bluffing stage where a parrot will test you to see how much it can get away with, then settle down again.Hormonal yes for Astrix is growing up to be an adult and probably doesn't understand the stages he's going through also.Bluffing stage can happen at any time when a parrot grows up to be and adult, all depends on the parrot.
