Baby Goffin's Molting & biting questions  Reply with quote

My 7 month old Goffin's Valentine, is going through our first molt together. Is there anything I should expect or look for? She seems to be ok, just a little tender in spots she has a lot of blood feathers. But that's normal right?
On another note, what is the most effective way of teaching her not to bite? She just does the baby nips normally, but I don't want it to become a habit that carries on when she's older. The only time she really bites hard is when you are trying to remove her from someones shoulder she snuck up to, or when there's company over. I figure she gets scared of the crowd maybe? But, she tries to get to the guest, so I'm not sure.

I think the reason why your baby is biting your hand is because it was a hand fed baby, and it 's too early for it to be weaned. Cockatoos in the wild get fed by their parents for a year at least. Now I understand you r bird is probably "weaned" onto bird food. but you can give him /her some comfort feedings.
I don't mean to be mean, but you need to give this baby what it needs if that makes since. And when it gets older as and it bites you can stick it back into the cage.
Yes it is normal for a bird to have blood feathers, those are the "New" feathers that are coming in.
I wish you all the luck with you r new baby.
Also if you do decide to hand feed it, have avian vet show you how. But please do go back to feeding it at least once a day with baby food.

Thank you so much for the reply, it seems I was ill informed by the breeder. I will have to make an appointment with our vet on monday so I can get her the level of care she needs. I adore her and want to give her the best care possible. Thank you for letting me know!

I found some of the web-site's I did my research on before getting Valentine. They say other-wise, so I though it was ok. Not to worry, I still plan on making a trip to the vet and talk over what to do with him.

So far, I am still reading it, it sounds pretty accurate. I'm not a pro at it. I just know that they aren't ready to be weaned till they about a year old but you can start giving them harder foods when they are younger. It's mostly comfort feedings that you need to do up to a year. And sometimes longer.Ok I just finished readingit. It sounds really accurate. And it's by Sally Blanchard...........she's pretty good.

Yes, the vet office I have for my other animals has an avian vet in the same office. Not the same doctor but the same place. It's very convenient, only 10 minutes from my house, and they do late night emergency calls. (the do farm animals as well, so midnight births are common.)

About the breeder. For the most part they do mislead you. Some on purpose, some at lack of knowledge.
