Cockatoo species in Europe?  Reply with quote

Those of you from Europe, I was just curious about what Cockatoo species you see there most commonly as pets.

In Australia, it is obviously the Australian species; and here in the US, the Indonesian species (U2, Goffin, Lesser or Medium Sulphur, M2) are quite popular, as well as the Rose Breasted and Bare Eyed.

Is Cyprus in Europe? Laughing Joking! Laughing

Well, unfortunately, there almost no Cockatoo in Cyprus at all! I have seen only 3 of them! 2 was in Pafos Bird Park (Umbrella Cockatoo), and 1 at Cyprus 1st Birds Fair (Umbrella again, and in very poor condition Mad ). I wanted to buy one, but I did not find any breeders. Confused

I think those who want a Cockatoo in Cyprus must travel somewhere else, buy it and then bring it home. But I think it could be very very very difficult and will cost three times the bird’s price (which is 2000$ for the wild one without any tests or vet check-up). Neutral Evil or Very Mad

yakeeeeeeee Sad

Well actually, not all natives cockatoos are common around here as pets.

most common being short billed corella (bare eyed), galah (rosebreasted), and the sulphur crested. the long bills and slender bills are common, but not as common, but there are other cockatoos like the major mitchells, gang gang and the black cockatoos. there aren't that common as pets at all. Major mitchells being more common out the those rarer ones.

Wow, no Cockatoos for people in Cyprus I guess! Sad

Funny, but I grew up in a city in California (US) called Cypress, and pronounced the same, so I can also say I'm from Cypress Laughing

I have seen on the internet about someone who has a red tailed black Cockatoo as a pet. I think they are a breeder. It must be in Australia, cause they are so rare here, that I don't even know if private breeders even have them in the US. Gang Gangs are also extremely rare here and never pets. I've heard they don't make good pets anyway.

Do you ever hear of ANY Indonesian Too species as pets in Australia? Here, people can't get enough of the very common U2, and all of the rescues are full of them, since they are one of the most difficult to keep. Sad.

They do have the black cockatoos here as pets. I hear that they are lovely birds as pets, but require a lot of flying space, so it is not recommended as pets. They cost around $2000 - $2500 for a tame one.
I have heard that Gang Gang doesn't make good pets either. I have seen one that is pet, but he plucked out all his crest feathers. Sad

Indonesian cockatoos do exists in Australia, but only over in the Eastern States, and they are extremely expensive in comparison to an Australian cockatoo. Like a lesser sulphur would probably sell for $6000. and a Goffins would sell for around $5000. so they are not as common here since you can get a galah for less then $100 most the time.

Somewhere I read that Gang Gangs are one of the most likely species to pluck in captivity. $2000 to $2500 is not bad for a handfed black cockatoo... that is about the price of some of the Macaws here. I think it costs something like $20,000 for a Black Too here, when they are even available, and I don't think it would even be a pet one! Wow... a you can get a Goffin's for $800 here, but the MM2's here are about $5000. Just depends on where you live in the world!

Sounds like England has a mix of Indo and Aussie species just like the US.
I wonder if you guys have the Australian Greater Sulpher, or the Indo Lesser and Medium? Also, we have the smaller New Guinea Bare Eyed here, not the Australian ones.

Here in Sweden, Umbrella Cockatoos are definitely the most common of the cockatoos, then the Eleanoras and Tritons. Also Goffins and Lesser Sulphur Cresteds are seen from time to time.

And one time last summer, I met a Moluccan! Shocked That was really breathtaking, since they are rarely seen here. I think I've heard of a maximum of... maybe 8 Moluccans in Sweden during the five years I've been interested in parrots.

That's interesting how depending on what country we live in, we may have different species that are rare or common. I think U2's must be pretty common everywhere besides Australia. They seem to be the popular favorite.

Hi Julie, I think it depends on the country..
I live in the Netherlands and I do see a lot of umbrella cockatoos lately. Also quite some sulphurs (medium!) and triton cockatoos.
There are also a lot of galahs. They're very popular.
Goffins are seen also..

hello from Greece,
there are many white cockatoos (almost any pet shop got one) and some galahs.
but now with the new rules (bird flu) is forbidden to import from other countries outside the European union. So everything is from internal breeders and not from the wild.
