Color of Cockatoo cages  Reply with quote

I was just wondering what color cage you use for your cockatoos... I think most people probably use light color cages considering their white powder, but I am curious if any of you use dark colored cages? I like the dark charcoal color (black with silver in it) Does the powder really build up and show on this color? If anyone knows, let me know Very Happy

Apollo's cage is what they call 'Black vein' here... I think it's like the one you described.. black with grey bits in it.. Corellas aren't known for their powder/dust... so I don't have a problem with it... you can notice the powder over time, but not thick... not like some that I've patted anyway like the major mitchells or the umbrellas.. where after i have pat them, my fingers are left with a coat of powder. Apollo never have that.. I can scratch him for a long time and my fingers would have hardly any dust on them.

Oh, that's intresting... someone over here with an Eastern Slender billed said the same thing about the powder not being that bad... I've never heard of it varying between the Cockatoo species! I know what you mean about the U2's and most toos... when you pet them, you can practically see a cloud of powder in the air Laughing Just kidding Razz Yes, they are profusely powdery though.... good to know that the corellas don't seem as bad. Very Happy

yeh I got a bit worried when I got Apollo and he didn't have that much dust on him!! I thought he was sick and not producing any dust... and then I found out that it's just the corellas family.. so that's definitely a bonus for me.. not having to deal with the dust too much!! Smile

Yes, that is the color I was referring to... I love that color. Gryffin's cage is that color. I thought that's what you had for Apollo, since I saw it in the video where he was hopping. I really didn't want to get any other color, but I was afraid of the powder staining in the crevices on a dark color... Robin's cage is black, and the white from his poop over time stains some areas even after cleaning, so solid black is hard to keep looking nice. I am hoping to get that black/silver vein color, but first I wanted to make sure it wouldn't look like a mess with cockatoo powder!

Yeah, they say that PBFD virus that affects the feathers makes them have less powder, so when the guy with the Eastern mentioned how the bird didn't have too much powder I was worried, I hoped the bird wasn't sick too! So, you've heard that also about the corella family? Interesting... Bare Eyeds are popular here, and I've never heard mention about that. I wonder if it is them too? That is definitely a bonus Very Happy That was one major thing that I was concerned with about a cockatoo.

haha, well I don't think that'll be a problem.. and I do know what you mean about the stain from the poop, but with the black vein, it just makes it look like part of the cage..... That's the only colour I have for my bigger cages.. my smaller budgies cage however is either skyblue of black.. hehehehe. but they are a bit different since they are not powder coated so don't get stained and they don't have dust! Smile

I have a stainless steel cage. Very Happy It works perfectly. I used to have a dark powdercoated cage.
The powder builds up but if you don't clean the whole cage you won't notice. Laughing If you clean some bars, you'll see! Laughing

I go to this other cockatoo forum, and I've heard from little corella's owners that they have less dust as well. so I'm guessing that they are all about the same. Smile

I love it Very Happy That's great news Laughing

I wonder if Sue's Leadbeater's might be as dusty as most cockatoos, and it's only the Corellas that are "low dust"?

I had a Cockatiel before, and although he was small, I know the tiels are pretty dusty. I wonder if Corellas are less than tiels? Anyway, that is good news that they are noticeably less than most.

I think the other little ones might be less dusty as well, though.

Our G2 is not dusty at all. I really need to dig in her feathers for quite a long time to even get a little dust on me. But I think the Ducorps are similar as well.....same with BE2s.

And BTW.....we have a cream colored cage for both Sera and Uri. It just maches the house better! lol

I think leadbeaters are lower in dust than other cockatoos. Ah well, I only have Misty to compare with. She had a lot more dust! Exclamation

I am learning a lot about Cockatoo dust here Laughing I always just assumed that ALL the cockatoo species had the same amount of dust... good to know they don't. I bet the Rose Breasted don't have as much either?

You're right, the rosies aren't dusty at all... My parent's rosie is not a dust bag for sure. although I think they are still a fraction dustier than corellas. and also the leadbeater that I've met left a fair bit of dust in comparison to corellas, but this one that I'm talking about doesn't get much shower as it's a shop bird so may be that's why it's dustier compare to those that get shower a lot.

I would think the corellas would be dustier than the rosies since they're white. I always thought it was the white ones that produced the most dust. I guess it just has to do with the species. So your parents rosie is even dustier than Apollo? That's great! I was trying to imagine the thick cloud of dust in my apartment that I'd have to deal with Laughing Now after hearing this, I won't be so afraid to get that dark colored cage that I want Very Happy
