Cheeta, I'm actually glad that they have cracked down on the availability of birds. There are plenty of breeders and aviaries where people can get birds. The only reason I say this is cuz too many people get birds as a fashion statement then once the fashion is out, so is the bird. There are plenty of birds who need homes out there. No need to bring in new wild ones just to say we have one, ya know? |

Oh absolutely!! I totally agree with what you're saying 100%. There are enough breeders out there now that if anyone truely want a bird that they can get one. I think it's great that the importing of bird is being banned here. As much as I love all those parrots and cockatoos that are foreign to Australia, I also respect the ones here, and that I understand the implications it could mean if the imported guys escaped and make a population here and take away the natural habitat of the Australian birds!!
As you say, there are already enough birds out there that requires home, so why import? |

When I was talking to someone the other day about baby sulfers, he told me that here in Australia (or maybe he just meant Victoria, not sure now) that they have stopped trapping the wild birds due to the high incidence of PBFD in them. People would buy these babies (me included about 20 years ago not realising they were trapped wild babies until after i bought them) and after a period of time they would be sick and find out they had PBFD. Back in those days you could buy a sulfer baby for $50.00 Australian (I know because that is what it cost me back then). But now you can only get them from breeders so that is why they cost more. I have seen some Black cockies advertised for around $3000. And if you can pick up a LSC 'too for only $1500 that is a bargain. The breeder I was talking to the other day (he does not breed the LSC) said they cost around $25000.00 here in Australia and only sold to breeders. So unless I got it wrong, that is a very cheap LSC. |

Hey BirdieLover, overseas in countries like the US, the LSC do go for around that price, but then again, the galahs would go for that price as well, and the Major Mitchells goes for over $3000. The black cockies, I've heard that they go for over $20000US. So really it's in respect to where you're at, and how common they are in that country. |

Yeah I know, I was just "comparing" prices of birds from here to over there. It is amazing how most of our "common native" birds are cheap here (I said most) and so expensive there, but then over there the macaws and grey are cheap and we pay a lot for them.
Just comparing.

The breeder I spoke to sells handraised sulfers (I assume they are the greaters because he does not have the lesser) for $500 Australian. I have heard others say less than that. |

Gee I wish that you can get a greater sulfur for that price here in Western Australia. they usually go for like around $1000 handreared.
I saw that cutest one a while back, but of course there's no way I could afford the amount at that time!!! |

wow $1000 for a handraised cockatoo. That is more than I paid for my ekkie and she is not Australian. The breeder I got Skye (RSE) from also breeds the 'toos and he has a good reputation for looking after his babies and for healthy birds too. I thought prices were fairly constant within Australia but obviously not. |

Importing bird's in Australia now is illegal even as pets
(about 12 months ago)like Bih said.Electus parrots here in Melbourne go for about $1200 each (hand reared?)The only country that is allowed to import birds into Australia is New Zealand, though they have never allowed importing of birds to there country so you can see why..he |

Ekkie goes for about the same as the sulfur crested here, roughly $900 - $1100... Sulfur crested is the most expensive white cockatoos you can get in Western Australia, then followed by the western long billed corellas($400 - $600), then the Eastern long billed corellas( $300 - $400) than the little corellas($100 - $250). Major mitchell ($450 - $800) comes in between the sulfur crested and the Western long billed. Galah is the cheapest here with some handreared ones for $60. The blackies are usually $2000 or above, unless you get lucky and got them from an aution or something, the reserve are usually set at around $1500. Gang gangs goes for around $2200 here. Did I miss any out?? The most expensive birds by far that I've laid my eyes here are a pair of breeding scarlet macaw, or was that green wing, can't remember, but they went for $32000 for the pair!! Talk about a bit steep here!!!! |

I paid $800 for my Redsided female ekkie last year. I have had her exactly 1 year today. She was a handraised baby. I have another breeder I contacted about another ekkie and he sells his for around $500-$600. He lives 2.5 hours south of me.
The breeder of my ekkie sells his MM2 for $500 and his sulfers for $500 and his galahs for $400, I do not know the prices of the others. I think his corellas were about the same price - we did talk about them, I just can't remember if a price was mentioned.
The prices I mentioned are for handraised babies. |
