Following on from my last post, what is everyone feeding thier cockatoos?
Realising that there is much debate about this subject, should it be pellets if so which? Seeds (found naturally in the wild in Aus) accompanied with fresh? I am in a bit of a quandry at the moment about diet obviously wanting to do the best for my bird. What are your personal views on diet?

I feed a mixture of everything.
Sera and Uri both get pellets, a seed mix (with nuts, dried fruit, dried peppers, different seeds, and some grains), fresh veggies and fruit. Then, they have what we eat when they eat dinner with us at the table. Basically, I just let them eat off my plate if they want to.
Uri loves Ritz crackers. He picks out the dried peppers in the seed mix and tosses those....must not like them! lol Sera will try anything. Uri is wary of new foods and needs to have them in his cage a few times before he tries something. He was on a seed only diet before I got him and now he just loves his pellets. He wasn't allowed to have the seed mix until I knew he'd eat his pellets.......and he does! |

Hi Chris,
I feed my Apollo (western Long bill corella) during the day
in his cage
pellets only, with seeds may be once every fortnightly... but
out of cage
, he gets seeds everyday... by seed, I don't give them everything.. I buy them seperately... I give him safflower, a bit of sunflower (may be once a week or so), canary grass seeds, raw jasmine rice (just coz he loves them so much). He loves those... If I try to give him the seed mix we get from the shop, he'll just eat all the sunflower seeds and that's it.. he tosses the rest!! He gets a spray of pinnicum seed (what a lot of people call millet spray by trill) and give him that twice or three times a week)
He gets fresh veggies, and sometimes sprouted seeds if I remember to soak the seeds... and he gets 'homemade baby vegetable food mash thing' two to three times a day with pellets mixed through out.. That's his favourite comfort food. he won't go to bed unless he's had it!!! well or he'll whine a whole lot until he gets it anyway...
I give him fresh veggies through out the day.. I don't chop them up usually.. he just toss them everywhere if they are in small pieces.. I give them big chuncks of veggies stalk, you know things like celery or those chinese veggies.. pak choy, or choy sum... He also gets brocolli raw, corns which he toss most after taking chunks off the cob.
The pellets I give is Vetafarm parrots maintanance (it has a cockatiel in the label), I tried giving him rainbow pellet from vetafarm, he didn't like it too much. that's the pellets that has colour in them. [/b] |
