| Hawks..... |

I went into the kitchen after placing Lexy (mm) on her tree, which is in front of a patio door window and it was only about 5 mins and she started screaming and I mean screaming, my heart was racing as I flew around the corner to her and she was looking dead on, so I saw she was ok, I then looked out and saw two huge hawks doing a mating dance in the sky and this terrified her to no end, I had to comfort her for the longest time, she was shaking, poor babydoll, all she wanted to do was tuck her head under my neck and peek out. My question would be this, how does a bird that is hand reared know this is a bird of prey? She is only 8 months old!! Wierd, huh? It must be imprinted in them because no-way has she ever seen one before. I wished we knew inside their minds, woudn't that be cool? Pam |

Hey there Pam!
Please try not to comfort your baby too much.. The chance might be that you 'reinforce' phobic behavior..
(My vet gave the example of a child that wakes up from the thunder and its parents comfort the child and possibly create a fear for thunder with this)
Try to distract her with something, then reward her for playing with you..
I know it's difficult, I'd want to comfort my babies too!
I have done this with Zazu and now he comfortably walks along bikes. (He used to be TERRIFIED of bikes!)
But on to your question: I think this is 'in the genes'.. Else they wouldn't survive?
Zazu was terrified when gulls attacked another bird.. (They were screaming and Zazu just freaked out!!!!) |

Sue-That makes a lot of sense to me, I never really thought about it until now. I certainly wouldn't want to do that to her. I'll remember that with all my guys! You gave me so many great tips over Sun Dance's short term phobic behaviors and they all worked WONDERFUL, for that alone I can't thank you enough, it brought my Sun back to me! I hope I never go through that ever again but one just never knows......Pam |

Hi Pam!
I am glad you take it that well! I was very well aware that I might sound cruel to you.. And the last thing I want to be is cruel, I just want the best for my babies..
Is Sun Dance back to his old self again? |
