| Never doubt a mother's instincts |
|
|
Yesterday when I was visiting LooLoo, I saw the supervisor for the birds departmet, she had been away on vacation since the time that we took LooLoo to the vet after I saw blood in his poop. She told me that surprise surprise, LooLoos test results did show that something was wrong. He has E-coli! I know he didn't get it from me because I've never shared food with him, or given him wet kisses or anything. Well, anyway, he's on medication now, and getting better... and they were trying to tell me that I was imagining that something was wrong a mother can always tell when something is not right with her child. |

Oh wow, how irresponsible of the pet owner to tell you that!! I'm glad you were able to get them to take LooLoo to the vet!! It's good that he's on medication now... thank goodness for your mother instinct!! |

Motherinstincts.. It's a special and yet a strange thing..
Glad LooLoo's on medication. How long will it take for him to get better?
Shirin, could the e-coli have been transmitted to LooLoo in another way? I don't know, but I was just wondering.. |

Well, I don't know, when I did a search on e-coli and parrots, I only found stuff about it being from human saliva. I know e-coli is a bacteria from our stomachs, and so it's present in human feces too, as far as I know the only way of getting it is through contaminated water.. I really don't know how he got it. |

e-coli lives in unclean food as well, resturants have a big problem with it if they don't follow proper hygine in the kitchen, things like mixing and storing cooked and uncooked meat and the wrong storage or cooking tempratures. |

Maybe the pet store doesn't sterylize (did I spell that right?) his feeding syringes. Or the containers they store the formula in. Possibly outdated food? I've never had to hand feed so I'm not sure how everything is done. I'm sure these are all possibilities. |

If the pet store handles fresh meat for their cats, dogs etc cross contamination could have occured using the same containers and surfaces for their food preparation, even not washing their hands in between handling meat and preparing formula could have been enough to do it. |

I know for sure that they sterilize the syringes, and they don't have any cats and dogs in that store, and the other meat eating animals like the ferrets get dried ferret food. I was thinking that maybe he came with it from the breeder, but now that I think about it, it's impossible because He had gone to the vet previous to this once already and he came back as healthy. So he definitely got it at the pet store, I'm just not sure how |

Wow, that's pretty scary to think about really isn't it?!?!? You know because it's so easy for the birds to just pick something so nasty and yet the environment isn't set up for things like e-coli to thrive. Makes me want to be more careful with what I give to Apollo!!!! |

E. coli can be present on the feeder's hands if they did now wash after the bathroom YUCK
Also sometimes E.coli is isolated from tap water samples. Are they mixing the formula with tap water? Usually a good city water supply (chlorinated water) does not have a lot of E. coli. this is usually more of a problem with well water.
Also there have been E. coli outbreaks (in humans) traced to fresh tomatoes and possibly other vegatables. |

oh double YUCK, maybe he did get it from a feeder's hands!!! He doesn't eat any vegetables yet, and I doubt he coud've gotten from the water because we live in a big city and our water is chlorinated. |
