New cockatoo  Reply with quote

Hello. My girlfriend and I purchased a medium sulfur crested cockatoo earlier this week. We already have a grey (5 years ago)and it is only bonded to me, so we decided to get a cockatoo as well For the first 2 days and even when we were at the pet store, the cockatoo seemed to favor me. Now on the third morning I went to go see him with my shirt off. This must have triggered some unpleasant thought or experieance because he was terribly afraid of me. Now whether I have my shirt on or not, this bird is terrified of me. Any thoughts of why he is behaving this way?

Hi Taco, welcome here..

Wow! A medium sulfur, that's great! Smile
What's his name? And your grey's name? Smile

Have you seen that you can also make your own homepage & diary for your parrots?
Please follow the link below to find out how! http://www.fluffies.org/en/viewforum.php?f=32

I don't know what caused this behavior. But you can change it, I am sure.. Please make sure not to make direct eye contact.. Draw his attention by playing with something near him.. He'll be interested I think. Then offer the toy and tell him to feel gently. Praise etc.
This must help.
You can also work with the bird in a neutral room..
Is he wingclipped?

At first I thought his wings were clipped because he never tried to fly, but now he flys away when hes frightened. His name is Foxy and the greys name is Torre. He has gotten a little better now, but hes still timid around me and prefers my girlfriend for company. I am going to make arrangements for him to see my vet this week.

Hmmm can you see how far Foxy's wings have been clipped? Perhaps it needs to be done a little further?

We got his wings, beak, and claws done today. While we were out we took him to the park. He seems to be a little friendlier today.

Hi Taco

It's good to hear that Foxy's getting better and friendlier towards you. In my opinion, I think it just needed sometimes to settle down into it's new home. It might have been a bit nervous, and may be had attached to one person to start off with. Now that it has had more time with you, I think it's slowly realising that its okwith you as well. But that's just my opinion though.

Has Foxy gone to the Vet yet? just wondering, and oh I was also wondering who did the wings, beak and claws foryou? Was that the vet?

Anyway, take care. and hopefuly foxy will come around and gives you lots of cuddles soon.Smile

Hi, and welcome. My too had a strange reaction to me when he first saw me with my hair wrapped up in a towel, he was a little wary of me for the rest of the day. He's used to just about everything now except things that happen above his head like the garage door going up and down. I played a lot of passive games with him to teach him to trust me like behaviours they would see in the flock such as making sleepy non threatening eyes at him, answering when he called, eating together and letting him sleep in the same room as me so he felt like part of the flock.

We had his wings claws and beak done at the pet store that I get Torre's wings done. As far as Foxy's progress goes, last night was great. We sat on the floor with him watching a movie. I scratched the back of his neck for a good half hour, but when I stopped he did something real funny. The background music in the movie got loud and Foxy stuck his crown up and started dancing around between us. I thought that was so cool. Anyway we're going to watch another movie tonight, so Ill post tomarro how he is. Oh yeah Im taking him to the Vet on monday.
