I just put a waste basket by my cockatoo's cage and she used it first thing.
They are super smart and if you hold your 'too over a trash can or waste basket when they have to go, they will catch on really quick.
Now she will hold it while we are driving and wait until I take her out of my truck.
Or I can hold her over a commode and shake her a bit and she'll go.
You just gotta work with them. |

I'm sorry to say this, but I wouldn't potty train her. Birds have very short internal tracts (right word?)
But that's just me.. |

Hey Sue, I was wondering about that short internal tracts. Honda, I swear, holds his poop all night long because in the morning I noticed shortly after I would wake him up he would leave this mammoth sized poop Bigger that Chaquita's poop! Four times the size Now I've learned to let him poop first in the morning before letting him out of his cage or I might have this big wod to clean off his cage and toys and perches It's weird
But back to the subject. I feel that potty training is a timing thing. Chaquita poops about every 10-15 minutes and Honda about every 5-10 minutes. If they are on my shoulder, I will take them off about that time and put them on a perch or in their cage. When they poop I praise them and put them back on my shoulder. Me wearing poop is much less frequent |

Food goes through them really quick.
I wouldn't try and train them to hold it in, it wouldn't be good for them but my Picasso I've sort of toilet trained (or he's trained me, not sure which way it went) he now has his favorite spots to poo which I put newspaper or vinyl under, he tends to wait till we stop in the car too because it's easier to concentrate, I also hold him over something before I go in somewhere when we are out so he doesn't go when we are inside.
Work with your birds natural inclinations and give him lots of times and places to go that suit you so he will learn to limit how far and wide he spreads his mess. |

CM, I know what you mean about holding his poop all night long! Iago does that too!
My point is that birds are made for flight. They should be light. So I think they also have short internal tracts?? I think with short intestines it's not very good to hold poop very long?
I have also heard stories of African greys that would hold there poop that long, so their owner would praise them for pooping somewhere else.
(I find it a little disturbing, can't be right?)
Your potty training thing is something else, which is ok to me.
Sue
PS I hope I'm not rude, sorry if I am?? I found it hard to use the right words here.. |

I think there are two sides to potty training. Go on command when your birds is out is cute, but as long as the bird doesn't think that s/he has to hold it in until you tell him to. birds do have the short intestinal track which is why they go to the toilet so darn often, if a bird is to hold the poop in for too long, it is not good for their health, and some birds as sad as it is, will hold the poop in until the owner says to go.. imagine the pain the bird would be going through if the owner just happen to forget.. or the babysitter forget to because it's not normal routine to them.
i don't train Apollo to poop on command, i just hold him over something or as disgusting as it is... i put my palm under him when i know he's about to go.. and he'll go there, then i wash my hands out afterwards.. i would rather know that my birds can go freely than worrying about getting poop on me.. but that's just me.... |

I know when Manu is going to go, by his actions & becuz it's usually about every 20 minutes. So, if I happen to be holding him, I just quickly set him back on one of his perches, & pick him up again afterward. Or, if he is on the furniture, I set a newspaper or paper towel under him.
He & Jennie also plop a big one every morning when I let them out of their cages. But there is also a pile under where they sleep at night, so I know they don't hold it all nite. |

OMG Horus used to hold his in too, when I took him out in the morning he would let loose, jet propelled poop, lorakeet style. Really heavy sleeper Horus, all I could get out of him asleep was "squeek, squeek" really wore himself out during the day. |

LOL.. that Horus.. actually it's like my mum's lories... at anytime that I bring them out of the cage, I always say 'shoot', and the next second, they'll shoot literally on to the newspaper!!! LOL... and it's HUGE!!! Apollo poo through the night I think... he never poo when i get him out in the morning.. there's always lots of poop under where he stands to sleep.. He's a light sleeper... |
