Q-Tip Needing Home  Reply with quote

Hi All,

I just wanted to share a quick story. The following picture is Q-Tip. She is plucked so bad. No tail feathers and..from the looks of it, no wings. She is a Goffins and is very small. She looks like a baby chick. She is terrified of any and everything. She is adorable though. We went to take her out of her cage and she was so scared she "fell" to the bottom. She has no use of her wings...so she fell. It happened more than once. Apparently she is VERY affectionate, IF you can get her out of her cage. It just breaks my heart to think that she needs another home. She was rescued by a friend of mine, that does rescues. And was adopted out, but the people just returned her because she was so terrified of everything. So, now she needs a home, and I can't give her one. If anyone knows of anyone, let me know. She is so sweet and just needs the time and love. Not to mention, having a bird that mutilates, Miss Daisy...it's just a reminder to those that consider cockatoos, or any other bird for that matter, the tyes of things that COULD happen. I'm not sure my picture will post...so we shall see!

Hmmm, can't see why you're breaking the rules by sharing this story with us? Smile

I wish I could give you an address for her to stay, but I can't.
I'm very sorry to hear that you can't give her a home.. I think she'd do wonderful with you..

Could you keep us updated when she finds a home?

Hey Tonya.

Just look at adorable Q-Tip. What a poor little thing though terrified of all little things. Sad I sure hope someone will take her in and take the time with her. I'm sure she'll come around one day is she's taken care of. I would take her in in a heartbeat if I was ANYWHERE near ya. Like even on the same hemisphere as you!! LOL. Yes please keep us posted with Q-Tip. Would be nice to hear that she has found a permanent home soon. Smile

Cheers
Bih

Aww, if you were local I would take her, I think it would be good for her to be around another too. Maybe in the meantime let her see you interact with your other birds so she can see that it is safe. Birds like this sometimes do well in an avary with a mate. She has obviously had a rough start and needs to be shown the way by her peers.

Oh I forgot to tell you, some vets will put jumpy animals on medication to settle their nerves till they learn new behaviours, might be worth a try.

Tonya, how are you getting on with Q-Tip?
Maybe she would benifit from a name change too? like QT (pronounced cutie)
I gave Picasso some warm camomile tea last night, he loved it! He turned into a big boofy bundle of fluff and went to sleep straight after, must be the birdy equivalent of warm milk before bed. I don't know if it's good for birds but if it has the same effect on Q-Tip as it had on Picasso she will be much calmer.

Hi Shells Picasso! Sorry it's taken me so long! Q-Tip is doing good!! I actually think Q-Tip did have a different name, but everyone started calling him that because he looks like a Q-Tip! Funny, when I talk to Charlene I call him Cutie Pie Q-Tip! Smile Still in the process of finding a forever home. Have some good candidates, just waiting on some responses. I found out today that Q-Tip would much rather be around other cockatoos as opposed to humans. So, a home with cockatoos would be better. I would take Q-Tip, but being the mommy of a self mutilator, that is so heartbreaking at times and emotionally stressful for me. I don't think I could take on another bird of that nature. Plus, I don't have the time right now to have a bird like that come into our home. It breaks my heart...but, for me, I think it would be too heartbreaking. I don't know if you can understand, but, I'm just a very passionate person and I think at this time in my life right now, it would be too much.

She also talked to Tracey, our vet, and got the ok to place Q-Tip in this rescue we have here...and that place is actually very cool. It's weird, you get all the killers together there (males..usually) put them together and they are fine. Isn't that weird!? But....the plan is to not do that and rather find Q-Tip a forever home. That would be last resort. But, like I said, I feel comfortable in the people that I have spoke to about him. I just get worried flying him across the country. I will continue to keep you all posted. Smile

Yes yes!!! Sorry! I've been so busy lately. Hopefully I will know more in a couple days! Thanks for reminding me.

Charlene, the one that has been fostering Q-Tip, spoke to our vet again. One of our vets lives next to a sanctuary for cockatoos...it's suppose to be REALLY cool and I've have heard nothing but great stories from the place. Well, there is another bird there like Q-Tip, same issues, etc. and they thought they would try to pair them up and see how they do. Charlene insisted that Q-Tip would really do best with another cockatoo, or many because any time cockatoos come over (she boards as well) Q-Tip will just go that end of the cage and just stare at the bird the whole time. Charlene says that Q-Tip is most happy when surrounded by other cockatoos. So, in this case, it seemed to be the best decision. The good thing is, because they have such close ties with the sanctuary, if this doesn't go as planned, Q-Tip will go back to Charlene and we will go from there. But, we are keeping our feathers crossed! Plus, Charlene and I thought, shipping Q-Tip would probably be the most traumatic thing ever. I imagine...IF Q-Tip ever comes back, I might see how he does with Frisbee or Daisy. You never know! Thanks for asking Shell!! Sorry it's taken me so long! Very Happy I love happy endings too! And I sure like everyone over on this board...if you know what I'm saying!

Thanks for your post here, Tonya!

Great to hear that Q-tip is doing ok.. Smile
I am touched when I read all the things you guys think of, what would be best for Q-tip, your devotion to him..
About your decision: I hope it works out.. And that you also have a option to choose when this decision won't work..

It's funny how we can make nicknames for cute birdies or other pets, can we? Like you made : Cutie Pie Q-Tip.. LOL!

It's weird, you get all the killers together there (males..usually) put them together and they are fine.
How funny to read this! Perhaps it's because there are no females to be aggressive for? I don't know?

Hi Kathy

Yes Q-tip has found a home, well not really a 'home' as such. She is now happily living in a santuary with lots of other Cockatoos. she prefers bird companion over humans hence why she's now in a sanctuary. Smile

Have you been to the bird shelters to see if they have any birds available for adoption? We have the RSPCA here, last time I looked they had surendered cockatoos for $5 they are so common over here you can't give them away.
