I am considering getting a major mitchell cockatoo. I was hoping some people could tell me some of their typical personality traits. I also wanted to know what a good size cage would be and average prices in the US. I already have a rose breasted and a goffin, along with caiques, conures and pionus. Cockatoos are my favorite. Thanks.

What would you like to know?
Zazu is more aloof than other toos, but he can also enjoy some cuddles..
He is quite active and likes his toys a lot.. I would suggest a stainless steel cage as mm2 are great chewers. Also I'd suggest a large cage as they're so active.
Please tell us more about your flock, I'm quite curious!
PS What made you interested in mm2? |

Wow Chris,
Welcome to the board, I hope you enjoy your stay here with us!!
You've got a wonderful flock going there. A Major Mitchell cockatoo would just be an absolute delightful addition to your flock! I don't really know much about the MM2 personalities, sorry i can't really help you there, but I do wish you luck with whatever you decide to do. Let us know and keep us updated. We would just love to have another MM2 parront here on the board!
Cheers

Their beauty is what first interested me. It is so hard to find any info on them. Is Zazu silly? Is he aloof with you too, or just with people he doesn't know well? I like how my goffin and galah are more independant than some of the other cockatoos but still want to play with me. If I get one, I planned on getting a stainless steel cage. What size is good? 30x36? My galah is in 30x36, but my goffin is in 24x34 since she isn't nearly as active.
The rest of my flock is 2 white belly caiques, 1 black headed caique, 1 sun conure, 1 green cheek conure, 1 maxi pionus, 1 white cap pionus, 1 galah and 1 goffin cockatoo. The galah is even sillier than the caiques. Cockatoos are my favorite though. |

Their beauty certainly is stunning.. But, there's another side of the coin. Zazu isn't an easy boy at all.
Perhaps it's just Zazu..
He is kind of freaky when he sees new things, but he'll recover faster than some time ago.
He isn't aloof with me, he just wants to be with me but he doesn't like scratches that much. He'll sit with other people, but he doesn't like them to scratch him at all!
I think it's a wonderful decision to get a stainless steel cage. I have heard of a person with a macaw & leadbeaters and she says that her mm2 can easily rival her b & g macaw when it comes to chewing!
I'd go for a large cage. Mm2 are slightly larger than a galah..
I'm looking forward hearing about the rest of your flock!

A friend of mine knows someone that needs to fine a home for hers due to illness, which is what made me start looking for info. Hopefully I will get to talk to her soon. I'll have to wait til I meet her to decide. I don't mind birds that need to be worked with. Last year my galah turned phobic and I had a real challenge working he through it. |

I see.. It's not a nice thing when one has to give up his or her pets due to illness. I hope you'll decide to take the mm2 in.
How did your galah turn out to be after working with him? Did you get rid of the phobic behavior completely? |

My friend saw the MM and said she was stunning, but she didn't hold her. I almost fell over when she told me about her. I wish I had gone with her. My friend isn't a cockatoo person, so she wasn't interested at all.
My galah isn't back to where he originally was, but he is doing great. He still doesn't always want me to pick him up from inside the cage, but usually comes right over to me to play. I also let his wings grow in, which I think helped him alot. This boy loves to fly and has learned really well. |

Good to hear that your galah is doing so well, you'll get to the point where he used to be eventually.. Perhaps even further!
Don't worry..
Galahs are great flyers! |

Ok I am looking for info on MM2's also. I am gathering from what I just read that Zazu has a personality like my female eclectus. she loves to sit with me "but please do not touch the merchandise". She is extemely intelligent, and talks - sometimes even puts things into context when talking. She will go to other people if she knows them, warily if she does not know them. She is incredible with my 3 year old boy, she loves to come down and check out whatever he is doing.
When my galah (RB2) was alive, she loved to be loved and patted, but definelty was more independant than other 'toos. she was quite happy to be in her cage, but loved to be out walking around the yard, or sitting on someones shoulder or just being patted.
So will a MM fit into my family?
