I hear ya about the never ending molt! This is my first time owning a parrot and I didn't realize it took this long for them. Not saying it's a problem but at first I was thinking she was plucking and I keep checking to make sure she isn't plucking cuz I've only had her for 3 months. She's been molting about 2 1/2 months now. And parrots molt twice a year? They say that parrots are more stressed when they molt. I'm stressed as well making sure she isn't plucking I'll be happy for her when it's all over. |

At a time of moult, it is a time we need to spend as much time with them possible. The stress levels are high, yes...so this is a time we need to be with them as much as possible to spend every minute possible to not only reassure them but
distract there minds
from thought's that may do themselves harm without knowing, normally, because they need us at a time when they are not thinking straight due to there high level of stress ...
moult
..(what's going""" on my feather's are dropping...hey what's this tube feather growing""" l'll play with it??etc..)As much time as we spend with our loved one's, this is a time they need us, to love them most. This doesn't mean that we don't spend enough time with them, just it is our turn to be the parrot and give what they give us....After this moult they will return to there normal self .Distract them from anything that look's like boredom. It's hard work but work's.Mylo has blood feathers now and thats why l'm not on as much as usual for l'm concerned about him doing anything wrong though so far okay.Mylo has even being going to sleep earlier than usual for he climbs on my hand where l'm holding my mouse here and opens his wing towards the door when he is ready to sleep and normally it's 8-8.30pm but recently 7.30-8pm..
Just thought l would mention this, though it's only my experiance and not fact...

Chaquita's personality hasn't changed much with her molt, but she's 26 too and has been through LOTS of molts and I don't feel they are as stressfull to her mentally any longer. I'm sure she's quite use to it by now. I do, however, feed her sprouts as they are high in nutritional value as their little bodies burn up nutrients during a molt. |

Hmmm oh well it's good to know that I'll have a never ending supply of feathers for a new pillow!!! LOL...
Apollo has been a bit grouchy and bratty the last week or so, more so now, I think it's the molt, but we'll see if he behaves a little better soon. He's just got so many new blood feathers coming through!! I guess I'll just have to deal with him being bratty for the time being! Oh well..
Greg, I think Apollo would rather me leaving him alone at the moment, seems to be a lot more sensitive than before, so less cuddling for the time being as he's actually not very cuddly at the moment!! Oh well... guess I just gotta make sure he's got enough nutrition going into him!! LOL |

Linus' vet recommended a bath every day during his molt. he said it softens the feather sheaths and makes it easier for the bird to remove the sheath. Also they are often itchy so the bathing helps
Linus has been molting for about 6 months now. He has replaced all of his major wing feathers and tons of body feathers. The vet did not seem concerened with the long molt. This is Linus' first molt. He was pretty bratty early on i the molt but now he seems better. He was less cuddly when major feathers were comming in (blood feathers) I think it irritated the feathers when I touched him accidnetly on the feathers |

I don't know how long they molt, I never really keep up with the time.. Sometimes they loose a feather, then a whole bunch.. And then, there's ofcourse the plucking.. |

Thanks guys for your responses... Apollo is being kinda weird at the moment actually... he's still as bratty as ever, BUT, from time to time, he goes back to being a little cuddle bugs, he would beg for scratches and cuddles and ask me scratch him all around his neck, and that's where all the blood feathers are!! So weird!! Anyway, he's having a blast in his cage with his foot toys at the moment making lots of noise.
I can't wait till he gets all his wing feathers back!! he's not got three new secondaries and about five new primaries on his left wings (the one that got butchered). so he's looking more and more like a bird with wing feathers!! |
