I am just curious .... I hear people talking about their different too's. How many do you have? I have an Umbrella, Moluccan, Rose Breasted and just recently got my Major Mitchell. Was also curious if you can see the difference in their characteristics. (I received them in this order as well) I don't know if and because the Umbrella was my first bird (2002), but of the 4 she is the absolute sweetest, cuddly, talkative and just the best all around bird there is. I then took in a Moluccan as I have been wanting one of them. He is now 4. He is also very sweet and can be loud, but different in his own little way. Then, I purchased my 5 month old Gala and he is a character in himself. Loves to whistle and be scratched behind the neck, but he also let's you know when he's had enough. Then about 2 weeks ago I received my Major Mitchell who is just a little older than 4 months. He is very different. When I first got him, he flew to me from California, (I live in South Carolina) so I know he was stressed with the flight and also so very scared. BUT, I have never seen a bird to act so aggressive (unless they weren't tame of course). After waiting for what seems like forever for him to be weaned, I was really excited and looked forward to the anticipation of his arrival date. Like I said, when I picked him up from Delta in his crate, he was growling and very aggressive as in wanting to attack. I thought to myself, what have I done? I spent $3500 on this bird and I can't even talk to him softly with out him attacking the crate. At this time, he didn't know anything. Step up or even how to perch on your hand/wrist. I talked to the lady I purchased him from and she informed me that this wasn't aggression that is was just fear. Yeah, fear showed from both of us. He was very much a biter when I first let him out of the crate. I finally was able to pick him up and put him on a stand perch. From there he sat with food beside him for several several hours . It has been difficult working with him and getting him to understand that I am not going to hurt him. I won't go in to all that but through these last 2 weeks, I can pick him up and perch him on my hand without him constantly wanting to fly down or away. He still doesn't want to step up from his cage when I take him out, but is getting better. From having him really makes you think about the different characteristics in the differenct species of the too's. These 4 birds, and we do have more because my husband loves his Macaws and his Amazons/Greys, are my treasures that each one is totally different. But, I love them all the same...I just know what my limitations are with each.
As I was saying....just curious if some of you have different too's as well, and what kinds of foods are you feeding to them as well.

Hi!
I am sorry that my reply comes so late..
I just have one cockatoo.. Zazu.. And he's more than enough for me!
I feed him Harrison high potency coarse, juvenile & other stuff. He loves palmnuts, do you know them? He also enjoys macadamia!
From what I understand, your too hasn't got his wings clipped, is that right? (You say: Fly down or away, so that's why)
Would you consider clipping his wings?
How're things going today by the way? I hope things have improved greatly.. |

I have a galah crossed with a sulfur crested, he eats anything he can get his beak on but I have him on pellets, pasta, some protien and fresh vegies as a staple diet. When the pet shop first got him he hissed and lunged at them when they went near him, he was still being hand fed, he was just scared, now he is such a cudly baby who rarely if ever bites, it took him about 2-3 days to settle in his new home. |
