| Wacko Bird?? |
|
|
Ok this is getting the best of me and had me in tears for the last few days.
Our U2 is acting NUTS. She has always been so sweet and in the last few days she has become just right down mean. No bites yet BUT a close call as she attacked my head today she had me shaking. I am so afraid of her now and dont know what to do. Is it the time of year or what?? The previous owner said she never acted odd with them?? I just dont know what i do I am at my wits end with all this. |

Yes, it is that time of year. I also have a wacky Too, as well as Bird Brain. How old is she? Bird Brain took hers to the Vet to have a horman Shoot, That last about a month...

Hiya,
Freddy, my BFA, can suddenly turn and have a go. Not very often, you will learn to predict when it is coming.
I would try not to be afraid of her as she will sense it and may take advantage, I just give fred a time-out on his stand or wherever he is and ignore him for 10 minutes.
hope this has helped, luke. |

Depends on the bird, just like humans each one is different. You might want to take her in to see a vet though, I am not a Vet, I can only guess at what is wrong. Plus an Avain Vet might be able to ease things a bite for you. Three years sounds a little young to be going through this. Next year it might be better after she has bounding with you a little more. Less then a month is not much time to develop a good relationship with a bird.

Annabelle,
How is Misty behaving now? I just got my first U2 the day before Christmas Eve. His previous owner said that he is quite a character, and he really seems to be. He got a bit rough with my husband night before last, and I gave him a time out in his cage, and he has been behaving ever since. I have to admit though, that I am a bit scared since the previous owner says that it is only a matter of time and I
WILL
get bit by him. So I am eager to hear how you and Misty are doing. My "Cry Baby" is a male, 7 years old and I don't know if they go thru nutsie stages, too. Can anyone give me any insight? |

You have to keep in mind that their hand is their beck. They use this "Hand" to grab things, to check new things out, there is a lot of things you do with your hand.
Yes you will get bite. But there are a number of reasons for bitting.
When a bird see danger to the flock, he trys to warn everybody to get them to fly away. So he will bite.
Overload is when you play with him and he gets excited.
Scared and you try to sooth him..
If something threatens his terrioity, that is going to get bite or you can if he is threatened while he is close to you..
Durning breeding season he will get protective of his terrority.
Jealousy (sp) if he bounds with you your husband can get bite.
There are a number of reasons for bitting. The thing you have to realize is a parrots love drama. So if he bites you and you react and make a big deal out of it, then you are teaching him how he can get attenation and he will learn it very quickly. A Too lives for attenation, good or bad they do not care.
Hope this helps

Thanks John,
You have given me a lot of insight. My husband already got one warning nip, when he tried to force the "step up" command when Baby was sitting on my arm and refused twice to do it voluntarily. Bud learned his lesson fast! He offers his arm once and if it is refused, he just gives up for the time being. When is mating season anyway? I want to learn all that I can, to make him feel safer and more content. |

Well, Correct me if I am wrong but Fall here is Spring time "down under" and Toos where ever they are at, are on that schedule...It can very between weeks and up to months, each bird is different. You just have to wait and see...

Remove all happy huts, stuffed toys, mirrors, snuggle buddies and try not to give too much natural sunlight. It will pass and your birdy will be less nutso soon.

Sorry to hear that she flew at your husband. Cry Baby has gotten to where he and Bud get along a lot better now. I removed him from my shoulder a few times and told him, "No, you don't belong up there" and would remove him down to my arms or chest. After only once or twice of that, he now does not go up there at all, unless he is invited up for some special reason. Other than that, he stays down. He is the most cuddly and affectionate bird that I have ever met. The only time he gets really cranky and is quite liable to nip, is just before he gets fed, and then his fuse is quite short. I am in the process of training him though, that even being very hungry does not mean he can nip, and it seems to be working thus far. I am just so thrilled with my U2, the Christmas gift that "keeps on giving"...love that is all the time. |

I'm sorry to hear that she took it on your husband.
I'm glad to hear though that she's doing a lot better. You can always choose to let those feathers regrow. Luckily, clipping is not a permanent thing. |

hi Misty. sorry to hear about Annabell being nasty.
First of all, like John said, one month isn't long at all.. and secondly, have you heard about the 'honeymoon period' for rehome birds? this is when they start to show their true colour... I mean after the period that is. with my cockatoo, I would say that he's just the nicest birds around for hubby, and is ok with me.. but I can guarantee that he won't be the same with anyone else. That could be the case for Annabell. She has to get used to being with you and getting to trust you. give it time, don't show that you're afraid of her, and give her lots of love and patience. |
