How long do your conures molt? Pico was going through his first molt when I bought him in December. It settled down, and now I'm seeing lots of loose feathers around the house again. He looks a little ragged under his left wing, too. I keep looking to make sure it's not plucking, and I don't think it is. I hope it's not. |

A moult can last for quite some time, varying with the room temperature, humidity, diet, other things.
One word of advice, try not to let Pico see you wathcing him, or acting concerned as that could make him a bit phobic. |

Thanks for the advice! And the info! The last thing I need is a phobic bird, LOL. |

LoL, that's probably the last thing any of us needs
I'm sure there are others here that can tell you more about what signs to watch for with a plucking bird. I've never had any experience with it, knock on wood! |

Well with quite a few birds in the house, you can imagine that my house is constantly filled with loose feathers!! one or another will always be moulting here.. hehe
With moulting, even with what Cathy said about humidity, food, temperature and all that, some birds by nature will shed feathers all year round, it's like they are constantly moulting.... some when they moult, they have a 'once only' heavy moult and that's it.... some have a little moult periodically... so you just need to learn what Pico's moulting pattern is... Apollo, I originally thought that he moults year round, but now after two years with him, I've learnt that he moults periodically... so every two to three months of so, he'll let some feathers loose.
Signs of plucking.. not that i've experienced this, but from what i've heard... a visible bare patch or patches.... 'unexplained' squawk or squeel from your bird... blood spots... feathers with blood at the tip of it of the shaft... are some of the things to watch out for. |

He has bare patches under his wings. Yesterday it was only the left wing, but today there's some under the right too. I can't tell "how bare". He moves away too fast. He's not squawking or anything while he's "preening"; no blood.
He's seemed really happy lately. I'm still hoping it's just molting. |

I think it's just a little over preening during molting. He has been doing better the past few days. He has pin feathers in the "crook" of his wing and body, so I think that's what he's after. I couldn't find any aloe in town that didn't have alcohol in it, so I ordered some aloe spray for birds from Drsfostersmith.com.
Also, I think a humidifier is in order. I'm in a pretty dry climate, summer and winter. |

We have 3 pluckers in our flock. Believe me you can tell that they are pluckers, One almost always has a feather in his mouth, the other seem to come in phases, but each time we can watch and tell that it is not a moult...
Most of the time about 3 to 4 days after the feathers start falling, new ones start to show up durning a moult. If you are worried then you need to go to an Avain Vat and have him looked at. This would be your first stop if he has a problem anyway. There are a number of medical reasons, Couners are not a spices that is known for plucking, so if he is plucking then I would be concerned.

Just an update...it's definitely the never-ending molting, and not plucking. Thank goodness!
It's funny, because his chest and neck totally turned orange with the new feathers, and I didn't remember that he came to me yellow! I thought, "awwww...that's so pretty. I'm going to be sad when he matures, and turns mostly yellow." Then I looked at the very first pics I took of him, and he was yellow. ROFL.
Obviously, I need to take more pics!!!! My short-term memory isn't the greatest! |
