| I clipped Petrie's wings&I need training advise |
|
|
Hi,
When the breeder clipped petrie, she only gave him a baby trim, and now he is not being very social and just flying, I didn't want him to become wild, so I just trimmed them for training purposes.
I am going to let them grow back after I've refreshed his training and flight train him
Well I thought I'ld miss him flying, hes such a sight with all those colours. I heard of cockatoo breeders only clipping one wing to keep the male from attacking the female...so I clipped his one wing..guess what that little bug could still fly quite well so I clipped both wings and...
THE LITTLE BRAT COULD STILL FLY!!
So I just kept him like that..Its better than nothing and I don't want to clip all his wing feathers off...
And training advice would be useful!! Thanks! |

How many feathers did you clip?
I don't think it's wise to only clip one side (wing), as, from what I have read, that can cause the bird to become unbalanced & could hurt himself.
Are you talking about flight training Petrie? If so, I'm afraid I can't help you there, as I am not getting very far with Manus flight training |

Cheekie,
I have heard the same thing as Cathy in regreads to triming one wing only. We went through this very same thing with Ann. A Conure is so light, you will more then likly have to get down to 5 or even 6 feathers and still she will be able to fly some what, but it will be harder for her. Ann or GW had 5 trimed and she can fly level for about 20 or so feet before she runs out of steam. I have had no experiance in flight train, but soon I will have to start that myself with Sarah and Ann there after.. Good luck and keep me up to date with anything you find out.

I think its because hes so light like you say. He tried to fly with one wing and crash landed, he was ok, so I clipped both. I clipped all his outermost primary flight feathers. If you clip all the wing feathers the bird cannot flutter to the ground, it falls and could hurt itself. I think you probably know this, I was just saying that for any new members. I don't have a camera at the moment, but I'm getting one and will take pics of his wings. He will let me spread them, and that made his clipping a whole lot eaiser than cheekie./ |

Yes Cheekie, You are right to remind everybody. The outer most feathers, up to 6 maybe 7 on smaller birds but no more. They can hurt them selfs, That is a big worry with our Dawn, she crashes so hard, it is really scarey when she does.

oh yes and by "training tips" I meant basic training not flight training. Sorry guys for the mixup .
I think I should rename this bird Killer , it would suit him much more
He will snuggle up to me and I'll pet him and he'll close his little eyes and make cute squawks, then turn around and start attacking me
I would just like to refresh his basic training, so any tips would be appriciated |

He seemed to like it when I read my fids a story , they are just like kids...cheekie got upset cuz petrie took his "Spot" on my shoulder..cheekie climbed up to petrie's shoulder and I put him on my other shoulder and he didn't like it so he was crawling around alot during the story to find a spot!
I just love my fids and would never give them up |

I have to agree with Jrmno & Cathy.. Trimming one wing may lead to serious injury..
I clipped 6 feathers with Wheezy, on both sides. He doesn't fly up anymore.. He glides down just fine! |
