| New Conure Owner with ?'s |
|
|
Hi! I just adopted a Conure, which I believe is the Aratinga species. The previous owner had her since 1994, and she has always been healthy. She recently lost her friend and has plucked her chest feathers.
I have had her for one night. I have not noticed any new missing feathers. Her skin doesn't have any bleeding or scars. I would like some suggestions or ideas on how to help her grow them back.
For only knowing me one day, I think she is doing very well. ( I also have 2 cockatiels and 1 budgie)
I look forward to any comments/suggestions. I will be updating my diary pages soon.
Thank you! Sarah from Maine USA |

Congrats on this beauty. I just took a look.. What a doll. Is she a jendaya? Or a sun? I believe the first?
Do you have any history of her? Do you know why she was plucking? Could it be poor diet? Or boredom? |

Thanks for checking out my new pics! The only area she has plucked is her belly. It appears that new feathers are growing in.
The previous owner said she didn't have enough time for her, and she also recently lost her bird friend , and then the plucking began.
I am making sure to give her as much attention as possible. I have added new toys and trying to follow her lead. She will kindly step up on my finger and lets me scritch her head.
Another Is it normal for Conures to do a shiver wave with their wings? It's like a 3/4 flutter as she looks at me. I hope she is not doing this because she is terrified! |

I am real glad you got the conure, it sounds like she needed a good caring home.
Yes, the wave you are describing is just exciement. Our Sun Conure does this whenever she thinks is is going to missout on something, like a treat, or when she wants out of her cage.
Feather plucking, it sounds like you are doing the right things. If she starts again, I would take her to the Vet. Also make sure she has a well rounded diet with Vegs and Fruits, and try to get her on pettels if you can. Other then that, Good old mother nature takes her time.
