Louie is getting more agressive around other people and everytime he's with me, (sitting on shoulder or hand) he opens his beak and bobs his head up and down over and over. |

sorry, he's a conure. i bought him second hand and was told he's almost a year old.
he's very loving with me but anyone else gets near him and he bites them.
when i hold him, especially when he's near my face and head, he leans forward, opens his beak and bobs his head up and down real fast.
i was reading this board once and seen someone had a problem with thier conure exibiting mating habits to thier owner and i was hoping this wasn't the case |

It really sounds like this is the case.
Don't stroke her on the back, don't inmate the noise she is makeing. Ingnore this behivor as much as possible. If she dose this on your shoulder then don't let her on your shoulder.
Anyone else she is bitting. Use the step up command to get her to step up on them, then have them give her a treat. Or if she is to aggressive for this. make sure that who ever approches her cage has a treat.
This would be a starting point only. I am sure that others hear will have better or different ideas, you have to sort through them and figure which ones will work for you..

yes, it is a mating behavoir. When she bobs her head she is trying to reguritate (throw up) her food to feed you (what parrots do to their mates). She is agressive because she doeasn't want anyone touching her "mate" (you).
Explain to her you want to be her friend but not her mate, don't stroke her back like jrmno1 said, don't imatate her little noises that might sound like "eft eft eft". everytime she does her mating dance, set her down on a playgym, or distract her by presenting a treat, toy or if she likes to bath you could give her some water to bathe in, or mist her so she can have a shower (don't spray her in the face tho). Try playing with her with some toys so she is so busy playing with you she forgets about you being her mate. Encourage her to play with you and play on her own.
I wouldn't let her on your shoulder. This could get your face hurt. like if shes on your shoulder and someone else walks into the room, she might bite you (cuz she thinks your her mate for now) to tell you to "fly away". A parrot in the wild will nip its mate when it sees danger to let its mate know to fly away.
To discourage biting, say no bites! when she bites someone. Let people hold her on a hand held perch and feed her treats and give her toys. Let her out when someone's over and feed her treats, give her toys, baths and stuff, and let the person do it most of the time so she know they just want to shower him with attention, treats, toys, play and baths.
Good luck with your little conure! I had the same mating probelm with my sennie. |
