Photos of wild Senegal parrots

(from the Internet)

I've always found it very sad that there should be so much information on the Internet about captive Senegal parrots and so little about their life in the wild.

I often think about what Boris' life must have been like in the wild, if he lived with many other parrots, of he had a mate, what kind of tree he lived in, etc etc. I always feel guilty about having a wild-caught bird : it must have been so terrifying and traumatising for him and the other parrots caught. The stress of being caught, the long hours of travelling in terrible conditions, and then going from one place to another before ending in someone's home. Some end up with loving and caring owners (like Boris ) but others disappoint their owners and live the rest of their poor lives forgotten in a corner because they're too noisy, too stressed, because they bite, etc etc.

All this made me want to know more about the life of Senegals in the wild... but there's very little information on them! As they are not (yet) considered as an endangered or declining species, very little people are interested about them otherwise than as companion parrots or for breeding.

I have collected a bit of information on Senegals in the wild, and this page is dedicated to all of Boris' "family" who still remain in the wild!

First of all, their distribution range :

Senegals live in the savannah woodland belt of West Africa, and sometimes undertake seasonal movements, moving into dryer areas during the wet season. Although Senegals have a large range (about 2 500 000 km²) and are considered common in suitable habitat throughout their range, they have been massively exported. Between 1994 and 2003, more than 410 000 Senegals were exported from Africa, most of them going to Europe (CITES information).

Countries that most export Senegal parrots include : Guinea, Mali, Liberia and of course Senegal.

A few photos : (please note that all of these photos come from the Internet : they're not mine!!)

Copie de femme au youyou.jpg This last one isn't really wild as his wings seem clipped but I still think it's a lovely photo.
