Laker has really become a part of our family
Today is a typical example - in the morning we take Lakers' night cover off his cage & take it to the East window so he can watch the Sun come up. He loves to sing away - such a wide variety of sound, it is much better than city noise. It makes getting up so pleasant.
Photo of Laker by the bedroom mirror - for small visits only
Next he comes with me to the Dining room, to wait while I work in the Kitchen. Often this is a good time to clean the cage as well - so much nicer to sit beside a cage that smells of nothing. He also gets new food for the day - which I am slowly changing from an all seed diet. Then he joins us for our fruit & watches TV with my son. I hear them playing 'poke the Budgie' as I prepare breakfast & a school lunch.

His flying has really progressed. Laker loves to play with my son. They wrestle a ribbon that I attached to the side of the cage.
When our work day begins he either joins my husband in the office or stays with me. Sometimes he stays in the Bedroom by the window with the radio for company. He sings a lot if the radio is on. Unfortunately he is often distracting when work includes phone conversations, so he can't stay in the office all the time. While I work it is best he stays in his cage. But he lets both of us know when he'd like some flying time & it's a good reason for a break.
He can fly around the 17' x 12' room 5x's before landing. He is very agile & likes to dive-bomb the cat if she is on the bed, trying to get attention too. He gets about 3 fly times a day; if I am not too distracted or busy.
In the evening he hangs out with someone until bedtime. The evening meal should have some vegetables so I am trying to offer him a variety with seed. So far he is not interested in lettuce, broccoli, carrots or peas - yet.
He interacts well with everyone, including guests. |

Laker & Vive
Here they are the 2 who have to be in the same rooms or place as each other. In this photo they are not together because I'd just left the room & Laker was closed in his cage. But usually when I' working or playing on the computer, Laker is out & Vive & he vie for attention.
Vive is keeping my chair warm. |
Visited my Parents last week Mo & Alice at home. |
The Cockatiels are doing well. I guess my lectures about cleaning & flight time have been paying off, Unfortunately they are cared for by my Mother's caregiver who is busy looking after my parents & their dog. Sometimes he doesn't look after the Tiels very well. I've made my mother responsible for their well being & I think she might be doing a good job.

Alice is quite tame. She steps up only if you say it along with the hand gesture. She does not step up onto a stick unfortunately, so she's hard to get down from the tall window sills in the sun room where they get out to fly & play. This day she had a lovely spray bath & Mo her mate did as well. He also got out but was quite relaxed this visit when I toweled him to get him back in the cage. He did not pretend that he was almost killed. Instead of chewing the towel, he listened to me as I carried him back to the cage with a relaxed attitude. I have worked with them for about a year & I'd say they are still making progress even though I don't get to visit often or for long.

New Feathers
Here is Laker almost through his molt. His blue tail feathers have almost grown in.
- see the above photo to see the tail when it's white. Some days it changes a couple of times but when he's in molt it lacks variety.

This is a cake I made for Laker - in it is cooked Brown Rice, Red Lentils, dried Peas added to Spelt Flour, Egg, Rolled Oats, & Honey. with a sesame & alfalfa seed crust.
I cut it into small pieces and most of it went into the freezer - unfortunately Laker has ignored it so far.

Update on cake Laker refused to eat it - but it didn't go to waste. I fed it to the pigeons at Christmas when it was cold & they'd enjoy it (it had been frozen so it was still OK)
