March

Toronto Skyline 7am  ~ Just yesterday the early morning looked like this.   Too bad I didn't get the camera going until the red was almost gone from the clouds.
A nice thought of Spring ->
We bought some Crocus from the CNIB [Canadian National Institute for the Blind] - fundraiser.

Right now March 1st at 3:30pm it looks like this!
They're calling for lots of snow, freezing rain all night & then rain tomorrow!  The trees are all in bud & ready for the Spring to get going.
& my husband had to go north of Toronto for a business call! & my son didn't even wear a scarf with his coat today..........grrrrrr!

They got back here in one piece & with our old car in one piece too.

I went for a walk as it started 1:30pm - to feed our local Pigeons & it was kind of fun - when you're dressed for it, that is.  I did however look like a Snowman in the end, the snow was great packing snow, so it packed into my clothes.
The ice storm started around 10pm.

Friday, March 2nd: A weather update - you may have seen some footage on the news - & maybe not! - well a lot of the ice started to fall off buildings yesterday - like the CN Tower.  They ended up closing a lot of the downtown streets. Large sheets with at least a 2" thickness, were 'sailing' to the ground.

March 5th - update - falling ice from buildings still causing road & sidewalk closures all over town - even the expressway that goes downtown but passes lots of high rises.  We had a huge drop in temp today & small freak storms.  March19th Monday - today - another snow storm.  We must have had at least 2 since the last update.  All winter nothing & now when we're looking for green - all is white.  I hear it will be +14C by Wednesday!

Now for some 'Spring' weather! ~ it had better come soon.

Call of the Wild
Well one thing i forgot to add was the loud piercing calls that Laker is now greeting the day with.  Thankfully they're not the first thing out of his mouth [+ he is very polite & waits for the cage cover to go] - he still starts with some nice sweet chirps & arias.  Then he climbs to the top of his cage, on the highest part of his Boing, & lets out the sharpest calls - over & over.  He will make the same calls if I take him out side.
I figure he's calling for a Mate or to any flock that might be nearby.

Bought Laker some new sprouted seeds today - this time it's Broccoli! It tastes great - almost spicy - I've been nibbling on it myself but it would be great in salads or a sandwich.

I also re-wrapped the gym with leather shoelaces, because he was getting his nails caught in the string & we hung his flex ladder down one side temporarily, for stability.

Notice how Laker is looking at me out of the corner of one eye?  He attention was divided between looking at me or himself, in his mirror. ->

nest.gifTaking a shower with a Budgie in your hair. Yesterday Laker flew onto my shoulder & clung to my hair while i was using the shower.  Unfortunately  I did end up with a bracing cold shower.
Laker's usual disdain for bathing

Usually my Budgie will come into the bathroom when I'm  having what I call a Spa.  He walks around the shelf in front of the big  bathroom mirror.
I will get him really wet with a  sprayer, before I relax in the bath.
We both finish up with a 'preening'.  My husband thought it  was amusing that we both were conditioning our feet at the same time - again no photos!

Monday, March 26th
Bathing in the sink ~ While i was running water in the sink he hopped down to the sink & then down into the sink!  He splashed around & drank the water but not a lot of bathing happened.  He was pretty happy with himself.
- Next time I'll try & get a photo or 2!  cparrot.gif

Saturday, March 31st.
This morning Laker wasn't himself.  We really had a few tense hours around here.
First off he was really quiet.
Then he seemed all puffed up.
3rdly he wasn't singing up a storm.
He also seemed sleepy - eyes closing & actually started to sleep on his perch at 8 am!

When he flew to his perch & started chewing at the bark, as he's been doing the past few days, I stopped him & took the perch to the other room. There, I sanded the bark away form the areas he sits on.  It wasn't rough bark so much as papery.  Then I cleaned his water thoroughly.
Laker drank his water, ate some seed & has been hanging out on the perch but no new working of the branch.

I had to work today so I was gone 1/2 the day - My husband said he appeared to have some difficulty pooping.  Like he was constipated.  But the poop when it came seemed normal. This afternoon he seems Ok - flying around, & not as puffed up.

We are still keeping an eye on him.

News flash - the get another bird discussions are getting interesting!
Adding another Bird
My husband & I have been talking about a friend for Laker for a while.  At first my husband said that he thought Laker was happy the way he is.  Now he worries about him when we are out or too busy.  Not that the little fellow is lonely much but his aloneness bothers us as much as we worried about my cat's happiness in a world of humans.

I was looking at the birds posted on the internet & also at the local shelters.
~ Shirin left me a note about the Toronto Humane Society - that they don't list all their birds - so i think I'll keep on track & when i get the cage I'll call them.
2) I also responded to an ad at a local Bird Club about 2 Linnie hens ~ no reply yet
3) contacted a guy selling 1 Linnie for his Gran who is going into a nursing home ~ no reply yet.
4) contacted a guy about his yellow Budgie - looking for a good home ~ no reply yet.
(are these ads for real?)

There's a All About Pets Show
April 6th, 7th & 8th in Toronto
[at the International Centre, Blg#3- 6900 Airport Rd]

Oh & by the way i have my cage ready.  Unfortunately PASO isn't going to the show.

My American friend got her English Budgie.  She has a n American Blue Opaline Budgie.  The English one is a mauve.  Both are white faced.  He is lovely & i look forward to her stories.  She takes her birds for regular Vet checks & will take the new bird to be checked out as well.

Going to the Vets ~ I haven't taken Laker yet.  It kind of worries me that I haven't.  I've been talking it over with my husband & I'd like to take Laker when I get the new bird, so everyone is looked at, at the same time.  Just wish it wasn't going to be so terribly expensive - as we are pretty tight these days.

But then i haven't gone to the doctors myself in 3 years - have to make an appointment soon I guess.
