Recall Training
Training Laker to fly back to me & get into his cage quickly in case of an emergency.

First week

A  few days ago I joined a bird group.
The members support each other in training their birds to do free flight.
A lot of their training is based upon food control like in falconry & using a clicker for re-enforcement.

2nd week

I also joined a group that specializes in
clicker training
, but I have to find a clicker.
Laker has improved dramatically in his response to us.

He comes enthusiastically & is more relaxed around all of us.
He will sit on my shoulder and sing or chatter.
He'll nibble my earrings, preen my hair & then hang around singing
.

the Millet Effect

The Positive re-enforcement or motivation has turned out to be his Millet.  Not having his Millet treat available except at training time has affected his diet as well.

He is trying out new foods - even some green pea sprouts growing in a container - so far he doesn't like the Birdie Bread {see last month}.

Recall Training in Review
I'd say it is a success - however you have to work with them almost very day for good results.  Like an IRN owner said to me - you have to work at the signals regularly to keep up the response times.

Laker11-12-06 006.jpg  Laker has discovered Asian Wheat Noodles.
He licks the noodles to taste the sauce.
He also likes to cut noodles into pieces.
Last but not least, he is eating it.
Now to get him to try the veggies in there too.

Ingredients Carrot, Kale, Pea sprouts, Tomato Salsa with Jalapenos peppers & some Cooked Onion [raw onion is out for birds] + pieces of Chicken [he didn't even look at that].  The sauce was my main worry & his favourite - it had Soya Sauce, Vegetable Stock & a Tia Hot Sauce.

Naughty
Laker & Vive
the Cat

NOTE:  Vive is 18, deaf, & some what slow due to arthritis.  They're never alone because Laker can't be trusted.

I collected the Maple branches from our local Park, washed them, baked them & screwed them together - but you can see it isn't finished - need more wood for the brace.
