Rio is home

Laker-Rio-flyingtime2_May29_07 026.jpg Laker is fairly happy May

I don't think I'm being excessive!  Just a little excited.

He fledged today!
May 3rd.
According to the breeder he's a lively one -  hope he's not going to be too difficult but i also like spunk.

Hello Jacqueline,
Just thought I'd let you know that the babies from the 1st clutch (aside from baby 4) have been observed eating and drinking on their own for a few days now.  This is a big weekend for them.  They will be separated from their parents - yikes!  They will stay here for at least another week to make sure they can fare on their own but it's quite likely they'll be ready to go next weekend!

Take care :)

...
Regarding Clipping - we said no.

May15th ..... Rio is quite a handful and I have been doing what I can with him but he is simply a wild child when fully flighted.  Now, all of the babies have gone through "flight training" so if he's clipped, you would not have the same problem the woman on the board had as that's something that happens when they're clipped as nestlings.  I do not want to pressure you either way. ........
later the same day ....
...Tonight I will actually separate him from his siblings since he sort of causes a 'mad dash' chain reaction in there.  I think he'll be easier to work with if he has his own cage right now.  Otherwise he is doing great ....

May 16th   His cage is right beside his siblings so he can see them and they can still interact.  He's getting more used to being in a cage and has calmed down quite a bit.  It's working out better this way because when they're all in together, he'll start flapping around when I put my hand in there which will make the other two flap around and that'll make him flap around even more.  This just completely eliminates that chain reaction.
Anyways, they aced their weaning process ;) no problems - Rio does have a small boink mark above his cere though which he got while he was caged with his siblings but it's very minor and nothing to worry about.  I just thought I'd let you know.
Oh yea - They're all little piggies!

May 17th  Good news, Rio sat on my finger for a good ten minutes today and also stepped up on my finger from his perch several times.  ...... When you get him, I recommend letting him adjust to his new surroundings for a few days before trying to handle him.  I think he will adjust better this way.
May 18th ~ he's home!
His tail is very long now.
He's beautiful.

Spring is here!

I have a confession to make
- the quarantine is basically over.

I hope everything goes well.

I know quarantine should be 90 days or 30 at the least.
It has been 7 days.

We got Rio from a small breeder in the hopes he would be very healthy & not harbour anything.  She has had a few of her birds to the avian vet lately & they all were OK.

cparrot.gif     The fun part is that Laker has met Rio.
Rio is still in his cage about 75% of the day - when he's out it is in another room with me alone.  He gets to fly & hang out + he is pretty good at step-up already.  He likes to chew - the Hibiscus tree & the branch that supports a mobile in my son's room.

I washed some grass we gathered in the park & the two went crazy - nice for them to get to know each other.  Laker is out & I put the Grass in a vase between the 2 cages. Rio ate the grass i poked though the bars.  Laker has been fairly happy with the new Budgie but he is egger to fly off to us & stay on his gym away from Rio while resting.

Now for the big room + sharing Laker's gym

Laker & Rio are getting along OK.
But Laker still seems to need his space.  After a few hours together, Laker gets bitchy.  When i investigate they both fly around the room & Laker ends up flying directly into his cage - no stopping at the door!  When i have caged Rio, Laker is happy to come out & behave as if he's the only Budgie ~ flying to us & from room to room.
Rio has followed him into the office but he is unfamiliar with that room, so he has nowhere to land - yet
