We have already had +36C weather at the beginning of the month. I couldn't be happier for the 2 of them. Having 2 birds is a lot of fun, for them & me. I am still happy i had the time alone with Laker to learn about Budgies. It is fun to have him so tame & wanting to be with me still. I think it will help the baby bond to us as well.
Here are Laker & Rio on their 2nd outing together - I love these photos. They are inseparable unless Laker sneaks away to hang out with us. Rio is adapting to being alone for short periods of time.

I was visiting my parents & the weather was up & down - lots of rain & sunshine. I rearranged the Tiels' cage & introduced some new branch perches.

| In the early days Lake was very reluctant to be too close - here you can see him on his toes, trying to keep his distance. Rio has no such issues - the closer the better. |
Now they are a bit closer - after only 3 weeks! They kept opening their eyes when i tried to get this shot. They do everything together, even sleeping. |

Rio needs training I was away for a few days last week & when I came back Rio was resisting going to bed. Every day it got worse until i resorted to catching him on the fly [literally catching him like a baseball!]. So rather than continue with this & having Laker affected i decided to step up his training - which was very layed back. He is a baby & i really didn't want to push him - we all want to live stress free, even the pets. I isolated him in his cage for 2 days. He got to hang with us & Laker but in his cage. Yesterday i had him in the bathroom [our smallest room] on 3 different occasions & i worked on step-up. & I also took him in & out of the cage a number of times. By the end of the day he understood there was a pattern & had calmed down. Today he did well in the morning so i let him have out time with Laker. Again 3 different times i put him back in the cage. This wasn't easy at all. He flew around & around. My son helped me one time & my husband the 3rd time. I decided if i didn't let Rio land he would tire & accept a hand up. It worked fairly well & he got lots of praise & treats. I also approached him when he was alone & he was OK but not great at stepping up. I demonstrated lots with Laker. I have to be careful as Rio will break up my time with Laker by pushing him away or flying around him & i don't want him suffenly taking off. So most training is done with only one bird at a time.

Next day .... Well there has been some improvement. I have begun isolating the 2. Laker is off to the office or dining area & taking Rio to the bathroom to just talk or do step-ups & prectise in & out of the cage. He was a lot less tense today. I think he's finally seeing me - not just as the caregiver.
Another day ..... With Rio & I getting one on one in the small room, over the last week, he is getting friendlier. I'll try & keep up this routine every day. But i do know that at the end of the day - after he's been free all day - he getts pretty wild & independant. |
Aside.... I have to start taking photos of Rio's cere.
It changes every day. Sometimes his cere is blue at the nostril area & dark purple below. Today it is white around the nostrils & blue below - i swear you'd think he was a girl - today at least.
Hilarious!
This is Laker's solution to the 'problem' of a constant sidekick. - he goes into Rio's cage, where he knows Rio will not go & eats his food & hangs out undisturbed. Rio likes to share everything with Laker including his digs - but never uses his own cage. |
Things are definately improving - last evening he only flew around for a bit & then went to bed. Strangely, Rio is using Laker's cage & Laker is using Rio's cage a lot ~ to the point that Rio decided to be in his cage as well. A number of times I've tricked them & closed the cage & let them have balcony time. At first they were not too happy but then they had naps outside. - so how bad was it? |
Introducing the baby Sparrow, Brownie.
I found him yesterday on the sidewalk - it was very busy so i put him in the municpal flower bed - watched for over an hour but no Mom. |
He's eating a mixture of baby food [chicken & sweetpotato + chicken cat food]. He's very tidy - pooping outside his paper towel nest. He spent the night on the balcony & it looks like i'll have to get a cage when he flights [29 floors is a big drop for a new flier!]- I've checked some sites - he should be good to go in mid July. |

This is the face that greets me at each feeding |

New 'digs' for Brownie after he hopped out of the old one this morning.
His food & straw spoon for feeding - the real spoon is for mashing & a drink of water, if he wants some. Inside the new next box is the old one - between 2 willow perches. |
In a nest of pansy blossoms & sweet grasses |
The white toweling indicates the shape of his 1st nest box - the new box is 6x's bigger. |
