PIWI OUR NEW FOSTER BIRDJanuary 30, 2007 Update: I snapped a couple of pictures of Piwi today after she managed to climb on to my dresser. How she got there I don't know unless she used the vacumn cleaner to climb on. She wasn't afraid of little 'Repeating Pete'. She hopped right onto his head. I guess I will have to supervise her much more closeley as she is the ultimate explorer.
Meet Piwi our new foster bird. We've been told she is an Indian Ringneck. That may be true but by her smaller size I think she may be an African ringneck. She is 9 years old and started life as a hand weaned baby. I believe she was in the same home for all those years. About 7 years ago her beak was bit off almost all the way by either an african grey or an amazon. You can see it has grown back slowly. I'm not sure why the owner gave her up other than saying for the last 2 years she has been aggressive and she has not been able to do anything with her. Also we heard she was really loud. Piwi came down off her cage and sat on my knee today when I sang to her and talked to her. She was very scared(shaking) but she showed no aggression like biting. I was very excited as my skill with aggressive birds has not been the most encouraging. Maybe there is hope Piwi can be tamed down a bit and get placed in a new loving home. Here are some pictures of the little sweetheart. Check out the orangutang picture in the background. John took that at the zoo a couple of years ago. We did take it down yesterday so Piwi wouldn't get afraid.....actually she was acting like she could see her reflection in it.....
