Visit to Singapore Jurong Bird Park

JBP Macaws0001_18 copy.jpg

Over the weekend, I visited Singapore's Jurong Bird Park (JBP), that contain a collection of nearly 10,000 birds, of which around 500 are parrots coming from 110 species. What a variety!

Although I was unable to capture perfectly all of the species, what with some enclosures under maintainence, wire mesh of aviaries blocking the view and many other birds hiding away from the mid day heat in their spacious and planted aviaries, I have however, managed to collect quite a representative array of photos to share with all!

Parrots can be found in 5 themed locations within the park. They are "Parrot Paradise", "Parrot Show", "birds photo taking", "Lory Loft" and "Talking Birds", of which Parrot Paradise contain the largest variety. The aviaries are beautifully landscaped according to respective birds' natural habitats. Some are given open space enclosures.

JBP Amazons0001_7 copy.jpg

...and how can I forget the popular Yellow Naped Amazon? Look how its checking me out. (Talking Birds Display)

JBP Amazons0001_8 copy.jpg

There are altogether 3 Yellow Napes at the "Talking Birds" display. All three seem aggressive when initially approached by me but after giving them a firm look and asking them if they would like a scratch, all three eventually, albeit grudgingly, give me permission to scratch them. The Amazon character runs ture in these guys.  (Talking Birds display)

The Amazon collection in JBP doesn't seem to be as extensive as I have hoped. I failed to see Cuban, Imperial, etc more rare species. Some of the aviaries are under maintainence, so I do hope to eb able to see these zons under JBP's wildlife conservation captive breeding programme in the future.

African Greys

Super Cute Conures!

 JBP Conures0001 copy.jpg

The Golden Conures, Jenday Conures and Nanday Conures are supposed to be in this particular aviary. How does one expect to take a photo of them in all that?!? There are several conures aviaries. (Conures Aviary 1)

Nothing makes my day like the uplifting sight of a flock of strikingly beautiful Sun Conures!! These guys are the appointed super models of jurong Bird park, you know. You gotta to pay before you are allowed to take photos with these guys. (Photo Taking Gallery)

African Parrots

JBP African0001 copy.jpg

Poicephalus Meyers. The African Aviaries are down for maintainence and the birds have been taken off display. So I failed to see other Poicephalus, African greys, Vasa and lovebird species. (African Aviary)

Pretty Parakeets

Moustache Parakeet. This is found in another location, dedicated to the Southeast birds. (Southeast Asian Birds Aviaries)

JBP Parakeets0001_1 copy.jpg

Derbyan Parakeet. Actually its hard to identify between Derbyan and Moustache Parakeets with such a photo. I believe the distinction between both comes from the colours of the chest, at least for me. The Derbyan's chest is a continuation of the blue of the head while Moustache Parakeet's chest is a rosy colour.  (Parakeet Aviary)

 Lovely Lories and Lorikeets

JBP Lory Loft0001 copy.jpg

Entrance to Lory Loft. The biggest aviary, or so boasted Jurong Bird Park. Nevertheless, i have reasons to believe its a wonderful and truly BIG walk in aviary. Fun for both birds and us!

JBP Lory Loft0001_2 copy.jpg

And when you walk right in through the entrance, you realize you at raised platforms and towers and the entire aviary looks right out of an Australian bush valley! (Lory Loft)
