Carly went with us today to a bar I've been wanting to check out called the Waterfront -- it's an old historic bar near San Diego bay, the kind that's still down to earth, inexpensive, and has open windows along the sidewalk with tables outside. Cool place and I thought perfect for a parrot. (The kind of place you'd find a pirate, you know? Aarrr! )
Carly sat on top of her carrier on one of the stools at the outside table, and proceeded to take care of the popcorn on our table, and of course everyone started coming by and asking about her. One old guy, with more than a few sheets to the wind, heard me tell someone she was an African Grey Parrot and he roared out, "A-freekin Grey Parrot??"
So now we have a new thing to learn:
sweet tourista: "Oh how pretty...What kind of bird is it?"

"I'm A Freakin' Grey Parrot!"
Irritating sideline though, the bartender came out and told us that Carly couldn't sit with us at the outside tables -- even though there were sparrows all over the patio! I thought about saying she wasn't mine, she was wild and just keeps following me around. But I put her stool on the other side of the rail and then she was no longer "in" the patio. Then she looked like the bouncer.
Funny, El Torito, upscale chain mexican restaurant, will let her sit on their patio with us anytime, and even invited us to come sit inside at the bar with her once when it started to rain. They must be on friendlier terms with the health department I guess.
Next time I will wear a patch and tell them she is my Assistance Parrot, and they'd better not bother us or I will sue.
