My mother has a 4 yr old male parakeet with a huge hematoma (blood blister) on its foot. What causes this and how can it be treated?
Thank you!

Hi Terry.
I've never had any problem like that with my 24 parakeets. Is the hematoma on the bottom of the foot, where it would rub against the perch? that's the only reason why I could think off that would cause a blood blister on it's feet.
Does your mother have those cement perches, in there for toe nails? I would strongly recommend against those cement perches as it really isn't all that comfortable for the birds to stand on, and also it causes a lot of friction between the feet and the perch, so therefore rub raw the feet and causing open wound to the feet.
I really don't know what else would cause a blood blister on the foot. sorry.
regards
Bih

Re: Blood blister
I haven't heard of this? Perhaps you could visit an avian vet. If might cause infection if the blood blister opens?
