| Budgie tumor? |
|
|
My budgie has a tumor above her tail. We took her to the vet, he confirmed it was a tumor (don't know what, or if, he said what kind it was) and recommended surgery, which would cost around $209. He informed us that if we didn't have surgery, the tumor would undoubtedly grow larger and eventually be too big to remove and she would most likely need to be euthanized when her quality of life began to suffer. My father scheduled the surgery, then later cancelled it, because "she seems to be fine" and he "doesn't want to pay that much".
However.. I'm still worried. I can't pay for the surgery myself, because I'm 16 and can't afford it, no matter how much I want that nasty growth removed for her. Though I've also read that budgies don't usually live very long after that kind of surgery. She's a pet store budgie and about five years old, so I'm really not surprised about her growing a tumor.
I'm just curious (and worried) about how detrimental not removing the tumor could possibly be, if anyone else has had this happen to them or knows anything? Or if I can do anything for her. I'm just pretty upset at the moment that my father would cancel the surgery and blow me off when I tried to talk to him about it, since our vet told us it was pretty important that we get it done. |

Awwww, I'm terribly sorry to hear this
Sadly, I don't think it's very uncommon for people not to want to put much money into saving a bird, especially when it comes to the smaller, more common ones like budgies or cockatiels.
I've never had to deal with any kind of tumors, or any other kind of health problem with any of my birds, so I really can't tell you anything more than the vet already has.
Was it an avian vet you took the budgie to? If not, an avian vet could probably give you more insight as to the complications of such a surgery, & the prognosis.
I wish you & your little loved one the best of luck! |

I initially typed about six paragraphs on how I'd make your father wake up to himself, but then I decided not to post it just yet. I've saved it as a Word document, though, so if he doesn't get his act together very soon, I might just post it for you to show him!!
But firstly, you might need to let your father know how hurt, disappointed and upset you are at his change of heart, and that you've felt as well his pathetic excuses as "blowing you off".
Next, you need to show your dad know how important this matter is for you. Would you be prepared to work for the $209? Maybe if your father can give you some jobs to do for you to earn the $209, then you can pay for the veterinary fees yourself! This should show him that this is a good opportunity for you to take on more adult responsibilities and if he is sensible, he should change his mind.
If he is still obstructing this operation even after you've offered to EARN this money from him, then by all means let me know and I'll copy and paste the six paragraphs of vitriol that I originally wrote about him. |

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about your little friend having a tumour... please know that I hate to say it, but there are great suffering from a bird who suffers from tumour. Unfortunately if the tumour isn't taken out, it'll suffer from great pain, and will lead really miserable live even if you try your hardest to get it comfortable. She won't live very long if it isn't removed..
I hope that something can be arranged like Fruitnutbird has suggested... may be you can do work for your dad to earn those money to pay for the surgery yourself. I feel bad for the little thing... I truely hope that something can be done for it. |

Yeah, he says that much money isn't worth it for a $20 bird, unfortunately. I really don't understand his mindset, quite honestly. If you have a pet, you need to care for it, no matter what it costs you. =/
It was an avian vet, so I know he knows what he's talking about more than my father does. Offering to earn the money is worth a try, but honestly, if my father isn't willing to pay the money to the vet, I doubt he'll be willing to give that money to me to pay for it. I tried to speak with him about it earlier today, but it basically ended with my father constantly telling me "she seems fine". Feel free to post the six paragraphs - maybe that will help me convince him that he's wrong on this one.
I'll try talking with my mother about it tonight - she has a tendency to be more persuading. ;] Hopefully I can get my father to reschedule that surgery soon.. I really hate seeing my poor girl so uncomfortable. |

yeah it is sad when there are so many people out there that look at budgies as throw away birds!! sometimes I just wanna give them all a big smack on the head and say 'wake up, all animals have feelings too!!' I'm sure if it was an elcheapo cat involved, it'll be a different story... soooo sad how so many people can treat little beautiful budgies like that... I hope everything work out for you and your little girl.... |

Oh I'm so sorry about your little bird. I would be devastated if something like that happened to my little Speckles2 Do you have family pets that your dad is close to? Maybe you can make an argument on that - say one pet needs a very, very expensive operation, how would he feel if you said "why spend all that money on it? It's just a <insert species here>". Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Best of luck to you and budgie from me and Speckles2. |

Xnuru, have you managed to get through to your mom or dad about budgie yet?
I'll keep budgie's health in my mind. Please keep all of us here informed of budgie's condition! |

Thanks, guys.
No luck convincing him yet. But I'm at my mom's during the week, so my father will have this week to really see her condition when he's caring for them. Hopefully he'll come to his senses after he sees her ruffled feathers and withdrawn attitude persists for days. If he's still not going to schedule the surgery, I'm going to talk to my mother about withdrawing some of the money I have in my bank account to help pay for it.
I'll try the other pets approach this weekend when I talk to him about it again. He paid numerous times for surgery to remove growths from our previous dog, so he's paid for similiar surgery before.
Sigh.. this is all so frustrating. |

Good news!
Well, sort of. Every time my budgie would go to groom herself, the tumor would begin to bleed. My father realized this was without a doubt painful for her, and so the surgery has been scheduled for Tuesday.
Thanks for all the good thoughts, guys. They seem to have helped to change my father's mind. I'm so happy my budgie will be getting the treatment she needs! =) |
