h'mm.. If you can actually see clear bald spots I would suspect that there is something wrong. This could also explain the smelly poop (as I said a healthy bird's poop does not smell). I would say a trip to the vets is in order.
If however you just see a lot of feather shedding, with new pins replacing them, and you can't see bald spots, I would say it's just a molt, but it doesn't sound like it to me. |

Well, he has pin feathers, but they fall out as soon as they come in. Whne should I take him to the vet? We are going away for a week, and leaving Dobby with my grandparants. Is this an emergency situation? Should we delay our trip? |

Ok, if the pins are falling out, then there's definitely something not right. I'm sorry, I really don't know how much of an emergency this is. Can you call your vet and ask him? If you describe the symptoms he'll probably be able to tell you whether or not it can wait a week. I wish I could be more help. I hope everything is ok, and nothing too serious. Please keep us posted. |

Well, theres nothing visible in Dobby's attitude, so it shouldn't be THAT sirious. We are leaving tomorrow, but I'll be SURE to contact my vet before then. I just hope it's not too late. |

Sveta, I'm sorry that you are having this problem with Dobby. I think he will be fine while you are away, but if he is losing pinfeathers while they are still growing in, it really sounds like something is not right. Not to scare you, but I think after your return, he should get blood tests for the diseases pbfd and Polyoma. You can google this, and I hope very much that it is not that. Try not to worry, and have a good trip. |

Symptoms of PBFD:
Symptoms include irreversible loss of feathers, shedding of developing feathers, development of abnormal feathers, new pinched feathers, and loss of powder down. Other possible symptoms include overgrown or abnormal beak, symmetrical lesions on the beak and occasionally nails.
Immunosuppression, rapid weight loss, and depression are also possible in later stages of the disease.

Symptoms of Polyomavirus (PVD):
Swollen abdomen, depression, loss of appetite, anorexia, weight loss, delayed crop emptying, regurgitation, diarrhea, dehydration, feather abnormalities hemorrhages under the skin, dyspnea, polyuria, ataxia, tremors, paralysis, acute death.

oh sveta, I'm so sorry to hear of the problem you're having with little Dobby. But from the sounds of what you already mention, my first thoughts were PBFD. It seems that I read somewhere that the first area to loose feathers is the head and neck. I hope this isn't the cage, but what's the beak like? is it brittle at all?? I would take your little guy to the vet ASAP and get him tested for it. I sure hope this is the case... {{{hugs}}} |

oh and also, are those bald area accessible by Dobby's beak? or is it somewhere that he can't bite? I am wondering if it's plucking.
But still eitherway, I think little Dobby needs to see an avian vet very soon. |

Also, you have a budgie too, don't you? Make sure to quarantine Dobby, and do not let him anywhere near your budgie until you find out what's wrong with him. And anyone that handles Dobby should wash their hands very thoroughly before coming in contact with Cookie.
err.. I might be a little late with this advice, I think you've probably already left for your holiday.. |

I JUST, got back. His bald spots seem to have grown in, but I think I will still make an appointment with my vet. Also, are birds supposed to be exited when there parents come home? In my opinion, Dobby wasn't very enthusiastic, (maybe because my sister was around)
But, is that normal? |
