| I'm praying that it's nothing, but... |
|
|
I just noticed something wrong with my male diamond dove Blueberry I was looking at him and I noticed some feathers seemed to be missing from around his beak. So I caught him to take a closer look and the skin that's exposed seems to be swollen and red, and also on his beak he has a sore, it looks like maybe a cyst or something? I called immediately and got him an appointment for the vet tomorrow. Wish us luck! |

Oh, good luck Shirin! I'm sure it's probably nothing, but I'm glad you've got an appt scheduled to have it checked into! I'll be waiting to hear! |

I looked again closer, and his whole chin is really swollen, and his beak looks really crusty OMG what if it's beak and feather??!?! could it be? His feathers are perfect, it's just around his chin and beak |

Shirin,
Don't panic, It does no one any good. It maybe what you fear. But likely as not it is something else. Let the Vet do his Job. Rember all the money he is going to charge you. Let him do the worrying. That is what you are paying to do... Good luck at the Vet.

OMG Shirin I hope everything turns out ok. Maybe he just injured himself and it's irritated and he just needs some boo-boo medicine. Definately let us know, although I know you will |

There is a mite that gets into beaks. It isn't hard to get rid of, if that is any comfort. Even if it is something worse, you have all of us to help you. |

Thanks everyone for the comforting words I made a post about this on a dove/pigeon board that I'm a part of, and they were able to tell me what it is. It's called a canker, and it's a really common disease in pigeons. What happens is that the bird gets lesions in the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and sometimes crop, and eventually the lesions prevent the bird from eating or swallowing, and may also block air passage! I got so lucky that I noticed this when it seems to be not so progressed. He doesn't seem to have lost weight or anything, but now that I watch him carefully, he does seem to have a different breathing pattern than Walnut. Seems like he's breathing heavier. Thankfully it's treatable. I'm worried about having to handfeed him though, if that ends up being necessary. They told me I might have to if he can't swallow. You guys, please pray with me that he'll hang in there till we get to the vet tomorrow! |

Of couse I'll be praying right along with you. & for you & Blueberry!
Surely he'll be OK until then, wont he? And then they'll get him treated. What time is it there? Or, how long until his appt?
Is this something that's contagious?
I know you're very worried & upset & I'm not making light at all, but I really have a feeling he's going to be fine Shirin! |

Right now it's 11:30 pm, and the birds are all sleeping. Our vet appointment is tomorrow at 6 pm, it's the earliest appointment I could get. I'm seeing a new vet, cuz my usual one isn't working tomorrow I really hope she knows something about doves... I'm sure she does, she is an avian specialist... Poor Blueberry, he must be so uncomfortable
From what I understand the disease is mildly transmittable through sharing food and water and through physical contact, but mainly it's tansmitted from mother to baby during feeding. I read that they can be carriers of the disease, and some sort of stress can bring on the onset of lesions Anyway, I've seperated him and Walnut, I really hope she's not infected too
Thanks for your prayers |

Thank you Gemma, you're so sweet. It's really lucky that I noticed something was wrong, because since he's not that tame I don't hold him or handle him alot to look at his face close up. I'm just glad that I seem to have caught it early, because in it's advanced stages it's a really fatal disease |

I think our time difference isn't that big? Probably an hour or 2. I will definitely let you know as soon as I come back from the vets. Thanks for caring
It's funny, here we were talking about serenity just yesterday, and now I'm a nervous wreck I couldn't sleep last night much from worrying, and when I did sleep I was having nightmares |

Awww hun, I'm sorry I can understand your worry tho. But, it sounds like you caught it early enough that it should be easily treatable! |

Yes, but now I'm being really paranoid and thinking of all the ways the other birds could have caught it For example, when I let the diamond doves out to fly, I put some seed for them on the window sill, cuz they like to sit in the sun, and sometimes my lovebirds go and steal some of that seed Arrrg, all these scenarios are running through my head Someone on the dove board recommended that I do a course of treatment for all the birds. I'm going to see what the vet recommends. Sorry to go on about this, I'm just really nervous! |
