Importance of cleaning new perches & toys  Reply with quote

I'd like to warn everyone the importance of cleaning perches & toys purchased from a parrot store. One week after letting my 8 month old senegal, Bo Bo, play with a new Manzanita perch & toys I bought from a parrot store, she got sick, was shivering every day & sneezed a lot, and was too weak to scream(when I get out of the door, she has separation anxiety). I brought her to a vet and got antibiotics. Now she's getting much better. My vet suggested a safe way to clean up perches is to use 1:9 diluted bleach water to spray all over the perch and let it air dry. If we want we can wash it off with water. With nonwashable toys we can put in the freezer for 3 days. This is what I'm going to reinforce from now on. I can't bear to let my beloved sennie sick again Sad There's gotta be airborne pathegons that got on the toys/perches. I never let Bo Bo out in the wild or get in close contact with wild birds, and Bo Bo's the only fid in the household. The environment hasn't changed for the past 5 months since she got home so the only conclusion I could draw was the perch/toys I bought.

Hi Echang, thanks for the tip!

Though it could have been the perch it could very well be something else. Iago got sick one time too. Things didn't change at all, he just got a flu or something like that?? (That's how my vet described it)
There was no cause for it?

Yes, always a good idea to wash & inspect new things well before introducing them to the birds! You never know what could have come into contact with it before you brought it home, even if it's vacuum packed, or shrink wrapped!
I never use bleach myself, but I run most things thru the dishwasher before giving it to the birds.

Hi Cathy, thanks for the tips. I'm curious how do people usually clean a big wooden perch?
