where do I start...ok
First off...reason I didn't introduce myself is I've been searchin online for some answers and this was the only place that I could find that would possibly give me lamen's term answers to my problem.
I have an 11 yr old male Senegal...woke up this morning to find him sittin in the bottom of his cage...very lethargic, and quiet. Normally he is a biter, but when i put my hand in his cage, he didn't even put up a fight. I took him next door to my folks house and showed him to my mom as it was her bird to begin with...she said he was cold...and to just hold him till he expires
I did notice tho that the feathers around his eyes were a little crusty, but there was no build up of any kind of discharge.
I did some lookin around online and thought he may have parrot fever...so i took him back home...put him in a box away from his cage and took his cage outside to be pressure washed.
I had some antibiotics laying around and i took a capsule and dissolved it in water and gave him a few drops...seemed he was very thirsty and didn't want to let go of the dropper. I wrapped him in a towel to help keep him warm.
I don't have the finances or the time to take him to an avian vet...any suggestions as to what the problem is and what i can do? Do I sit and wait, or is there something I can do to help save Sam?
If anyone wants to see exactly what I'm talking about...I can upload a picture of his current status |

Can you get him to the vet?
Was it people antibiotics? I would give him any.
Put him in towels with a heat lamp, give him some water from an eye dropper.
Keep us updated.

I'm really sorry to hear that your bird is sick, but I really don't know what to tell you... a situation like this requires immediate medical attention. Is there no way you can borrow money from your parents or something? The only thing I can suggest is please don't just let this bird die. If you absolutely can't take him in to see a vet, then I'd recommend you drop him off immediately at a wild life or parrot rescue so that they can at least save his life |

maybe you could take him to the vet and arrange to make payments on it until you pay it off or something? |

I am sorry to hear that Sam is ill..
Please Please take him to a Avian Vet...
DO NOT give him human anti-biotics - TOO STRONG for such a small animal.....
I agree with Shirin - take him to a parrot rescue - they may be able to help with finances or get him to a vet for you...
Please let us know how he is doing...

Well you'll probably have to surrender him to the rescue and they will for sure take him and give him medical care. Even though you'll have to give him up, It's more humane than just letting him die. |

well i have put him in a box with a heat lamp about a foot or so above him...he is drinking...and every now and then he would get up and walk around when I had him laying on my chest...then he'd climb on my finger...bite the snot out of me, then slowly go limp again...
there are no aviary rescues in the part of texas that I live..as it is very rural..and no vets open on sundays...so its a waiting game now...see if he makes it thru the night

I'll be praying for you that he makes it through the night. Did he eat anything today? If not try feeding him some soft warm food, like baby food, or oatmeal. |

prayers are a little too late...by the time i posted my last message and went back to check on him and got back here just now..he didn't make it...so after some kind words and a viking burial, I have laid Sam to rest
I want to thank you guys for the kind words and helpful hints....especially for a complete and total stranger such as myself.
thanks again so much |
