Jennies poor foot!  Reply with quote

Oh nooo! Jennie hurt her foot bad this morning Crying or Very sad She was playing on top of her cage & got a toe stuck in the junction, or seam of the cage, if you know what I mean. Gawd, it was such a mess & I was so scared becuz I had a hard time getting it out of there! I had to use a dowel & literally PUSH her foot up & out. At the part where she got it stuck, the bars start out wider, then get narrower & she had apparantly slid the toe into the narrow part.

I've dabbed the area as best I could with a Q tip dipped in that stop bleed stuff & she seems to have stopped bleeding.

It was soooo awful! And I hope she's OK. I've got her in her cage & settled down, the poor little thing Crying or Very sad

Hi fi! You know, she seems to be doing OK. I, on the other hand am still shaking!
She's climbing around fine in her cage & I can see exactly where the wound is & it doesn't LOOK bad, but what do I know. There's no gash, or cut that I can see, though more like a mushy red part, on the ball of one of her toes. And she's definitely using the foot, but she is also biting at it quite a bit.

Cathy,

Sounds like a nasty bruise to me... - Do you think that a Vet visit would be
a good idea???

She is biting it - oh no - can you put something on it that does not taste nice to stop her? Dunno what though....

Aww sorry not being much help...

Fi

Oh Fi, it helps so much, just reading your comeents has helped to calm me down!

Stepson has made some minor adjustments to the cage & minimized the possibility of it happening again, tho I'm sure it will always be a big worry to me now. I did get a pic of the cage & will post it later on.
Again, nobody to blame but myslf. I should have been more observant of the cage & noticed that & took care of it immediately. And I feel just awful Crying or Very sad
Right now, she's carrying on as if nothing at all happened & not even biting at it, but I'll keep a close eye on it.
If hubby had been home, or if I had my own car, she would be at the avian vets right now!

Cathy, first of all.. I don't want you to feel bad, blaming yourself.. Really, and accident can happen all the time, no matter what!
You're on of the best bird mommy's out there, so I don't want to hear that from your mouth.. Wink

I hope Jennie is doing better at the moment? How's the bleeding? Didn't it bleed again?
Can I give some advice?
Though I would supervise her foot, I wouldn't watch her all the time, or in that way that she knows.
You know, Zazu's plucking started when his foot got stuck. It was nasty. Then I watched him all the time, resulting in his chewing even more on his foot. You know the outcome.
Not saying that this will happen to EVERY birdy, but I thought I should make this remark?

Hugs to little Jennie.. ANd you.. Smile

Thanks for the nice words Sue & for the advise! You're right-I have been watching her a lot. I will start being much less obvious about it.

Confused I just realized that in all the excitement Rolling Eyes , I put this in the wrong forum, it should have gone in the cages, etc forum, sorry Embarassed

We just hear SO much about being careful with cages & inspecting them well & I should have been on it before anything like this had the chance to happen! You can't believe what was going thru my mind as I was trying to get her foot unstuck !

Smile Cathy.. Please don't think that I meant that you should not watch her at all.. Smile

Please don't worry about putting it in this forum. I think you placed it in the right forum? It has to do with health..

Ohhh Cathy.. I can understand many things went through your mind as you tried to get her foot outta there. But I'm warning you: No more blaming on yourself.. Smile
Really Cathy.. I know that if you would have known anything like this could have EVER happened, you would have done something about it!!!

OMG Cathy Surprised I can't imagine how scared you were trying to get her little toe outa there hoping to not cause more harm Sad but knowing more harm would have come out of it if you didn't react so quickly. Oh Cathy ((((((HUGS)))))) well at least the scary part is over, pfew. Maybe try to act like it never happened when you are around her, kinda like when a child falls off their bike and scratches their knee. Over worrying can stress the both of you out. Just keep an eye out for swelling and take her to the vet to make sure its not broken. If she's bending it good then I doubt that it's broken. You could probably put some aloe on it to help sooth any scratches and it's non-tixic and aid's in healing Wink

This afternoon she used her foot real well. She was climbing all over her cage & even hanging from the bars on top, so I guess I'm assuming it's not broken. But right now she is keeping it tucked up Crying or Very sad , altho she does that a lot anyway when she's resting, but I'm sure it's very tender.

Crying or Very sad Cathy, I'm sorry, I just read this! I'm sorry for what happened to Jennie, you must've been so scared Sad Poor little girl. Did her foot bleed a lot? How is she now? I hope she's stopped picking at her wound Sad One time I was showering Bunny, and one of her toes got stuck in the drain Crying or Very sad I was totally about to panic because I couldn't get it out for a long time, and she was screaming really loud and flapping her wings Crying or Very sad my friend had to help me to free her foot. Sad Please let us know how Jennie is doing {{{{hugs}}}}

Oh, it was awful Shirin! You just don't ever realize all the possible things that can happen I guess!
She didn't bleed profusely, not enough that I was terribly concerned, but there was quite a bit & of course with her flapping around like she was, it was spattered all over. While she was stuck, she was flapping like crazy & I was really afraid that she was gong to end up actually ripping it off, or breaking something!
Now, she keeps re-opening it, just by using it, so there's more fresh blood. I'm hoping that it can heal up somewhat overnight.

Oh, poor Bunny & poor Toby, & poor both of you Shirin & ksue, I know just what you went thru! It's just been such a bad day here & I'm still very worried!

Oh Cathy, I just read it too.. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that! Poor you and poor Jennie. But from the sound of things, you handled it well!! I can't imagine what I'd do if it happened to me. Razz

It sounds like Jennie is doing fine if she's already climbing all over her cage!! You probably already know, birds can pick up our vibe... so if you 're nervous and worried about what would happen, she's going to pick it up. Smile Just be yourself when you're around her. Very Happy

Let us know how she goes.
