New vaccine for deadly diseases  Reply with quote

I just wanted to post this to remind every bird owner how real the threat of deadly and contagious avian disease is. Believe me, it is out there in every country around the world threatening our pets as well as wild populations, although you don't often hear talk about it.

The good news is that renowned avian veterinarian Dr. Branson Ritchie and his team at the University of Georgia USA has done extensive research on several of the most threatening serious bird diseases, and has developed a vaccine a little while back for Polyoma which I plan to get for my birds.

Also exciting is that through years of research and generous funding through the Petsmart corporation, a vaccine for PBFD (beak and feather disease that old member Shell's Picasso died of) has been developed! Smile I think they are in the testing stages yet, and they are trying to have it out for public use by the summer of 2008. Read about it here:

There is controversy over the Polyoma vaccine though... although it is rare, there have been reports of sarcomas (cancer) forming in the site of the injection. I have to read and hear more on this before making my decision to vaccinate. If it's not one thing, it's another! Mad

I have heard of the PBFD vaccines, but not from the US though... the research facility that I heard about is actually a university here in Perth. but I don't know how accurate this is. if you want to find out, search for PBFD and Murdoch uni. You should be able to find an article regarding PBFD in the Murdoch uni site.
