Hi there,
We have 2 Fischer Lovebirds - they stay with my boyfriend and our CAG lives with me. Yesterday I was at his house and noticed one of the Lovebirds beak which were both bright red, has this longer piece growing from it. I have never seen this before. Anyway we are taking have an appointment with the vet today. I really, really hope its not PBFd and am starting to stress as we brought the Lovebirds to my house yesterday because Im closer to the vet etc. So the just spent the night and were in a seperate outside room from our CAG. Im just so worried now if it is PFBD and if so is it contagious to other birds?
I live in south africa and apparently this disease is not common here at all.
Any info would be appreciated. |

Though I have heard of pbfd (Which is an awful disease, highly contagious and deadly) I doubt if this is pbfd?
Here's a link about pbfd: http://www.ellen-parrots.com/frames-pbfd.html
Please let us know what the vet said! |

According to a lady we know at a local pet store she says she has never heard of PBFD where we live in the Western Cape. I started crying when I clicked on the link just thinking about Trego getting it. He (I think) is almost 14 months and we are raking him to the avian vet for the first time on saturday for a basic check up and to be sexed.
Im so paranoid though, just hearing these stories! |

I doubt it is PBFD. But I'm sure a vet visit will east your mind. Please let us know how it goes.

Please please don't be paranoid! Most likely it will not be pbfd. Could it be some kind of mite that houses in the beak? I have heard of something like this? |

Good morning.
Thank goodness I was just being paranoid and its not pbfd. The vet said it didnt even cross his mind - the Lovebirds look healthy and the beak just needed to be trimmed down which he did for us.
thank you for your replies!
Im not sure now if I should take Trego, my cag to the same vet we took the lovebirds or to an avian vet I have heard about. I have heard its not good to take birds to a vet because of all the other animals that come in carrying germs and an avain vet is better.
Any suggestions? |

Good to hear that! However to make it absolute 100 percent sure, he should run a blood test.
I'd go to an avian vet. Not for the germs, I may hope that a vet works with sanitized equipment, but because an avian vet has much more knowledge! |

I agree with Sue about taking the birds to an avian vet becuz of their knowledge. Our avian vet works in the same veterinary ofc as our dogs vet, so I HOPE it's all properly sanitized! I trust it is
Altho, it doesn't sound to me like you have much to worry about with PBFD. How long have you & your BF had the LBs? If you've had them for quite some time & they've not been exposed to it, I'd say they're OK, as it's a disease they have to somehow contract. I don't know much about it, but I THINK they have to contract from another bird. Have they been exposed to other birds that may have it? |
