Thanks Cathy, I posted some recent pic of him on my diary page so everyone can see his progress, in a nutshell, less fluff and more fat. Smile

Well he has new feathers growing and has lost more of the old ones, in places he looks like one of those spinny lizards he's got so many pin feathers.
Does anyone know of something like a natural pain killer or anasthetic I can give him or put on him to make him more comfortable?

Ah yes! Someone did post on this site somewhere about willow containing some kind of natural analgesic! Might be well worth looking into!

Shell, I am so sorry to hear about Picasso Crying or Very sad Keep in mind, I want to say this as gently and as appropriately as possible... I was wondering, how do you suspect he got PBFD? Was he young or older? Do you think he was born with it, or picked it up somewhere? I unfortunately know how you feel about having to euthanize a beloved bird because of a nasty disease. My Adrion (Bronze Winged Pionus) had PDD (Proventricular Dilation Disease), which is also viral and deadly to birds. She was believed to have carried it from her parents or from her breeding facility. I bought her from an exotic bird store who bought her from a not so good breeder. She died shortly after her 1st birthday. Again, I am so sorry, as I know how heartbreaking and disappointing it is, and at least in my case anger too, since I know who is responsible for it Mad

Take care... Comfort Julie

I'm not sure, it's hard to tell, he passed the test on the initial vet visit the week I got him but not the second a few weeks later, he was diagnosed a few days outside the time frame for me to have legally been entitled to take him back (which I wouldn't have anyway).
He was young, in the process of weaning when I got him.
The other birds I had were bought from the same shop in the same time frame and would have been exposed to each other at the store, no one else I know who bought a bird there had a sick bird and the store was well regarded.
Being a rare hybrid it's hard to tell what the incubation period would have likely to have been. At the first visit the vet expressed concern about his lack of powder, one of the first signs and his beak and feathers started showing symptoms within the first months. His health was ok when I got him but not outstanding, a bit underweight and worms, the reason for the follow up vet visit where I also had him microchipped. He was a sickly baby and the only one to survive the nest, one of the parents died while he was still in the nest so he was hand reared at the shop where they get a lot of birds through. I suspect he picked it up either from one of the parents or through the hand rearing.

Haven't been on the site a while, how is everyone?

That is so sad to hear Crying or Very sad Makes me mad when we get a bird and we just don't know at the time. My Adrion who had PDD looked and acted absolutely perfect! I have since got my birds only from the most reputable breeders and did testing right away.

How are your other birds doing? I hope well Smile that is so scary that pbfd is so contagious. If they are doing well, I'd think that is a good sign. Good to see you back Shell... I joined a little before you quit last time, and have been a regular ever since... lots of new people too, and it's still the same fun group! Smile Shirin is in Australia right now visiting Bih!

The other birds are doing well, neither appears to have been affected which makes me think Picasso had it from birth. The lorrikeets both went to avairys quite early, they weren't suited as home pets being too wild to tame and are much happier in their new environments.

I haven't got any birds at the moment, I've made the adjustment to Picasso not being here but I think it will be a while before I consider getting another bird.
